My best productive variants ... what's yours ?

Year after year, I get good productivity from the following variants:

Osborne Prolfic                            Moscatel Branco                    Nebo
Vincenzo                                      Elana                                     Marseillies VS
Enrico                                          Barbillone
LSU Golden Celeste                   Negronne
Hollier                                        Vern's B. Turkey
Yugo Yellow(late)                       Desert King

Potentials Of Good Productivity Variants are :

Conadria                             Tena
Roundhill                            Rattlesnake
Latarrola                             Ficazzana
Pane e Vino White             Brooklyn Wht

I have a Desert King too, it's awesome for brebas, 4-7 on each branch of my young tree (3rd year). My Osborne is not as prolific, 2-3 figs per branch but quite yummy.

I acquired about 30 varieties last year, maybe some will perform better for the main crop figs.

pylot, my Osborne is in-ground, about 6ft tall and reliably every year it gives me hundreds of figs. It is well branched. My Osborne is at least 7 or 8 years old. DK has always been reliable.

I wonder if there's various strains of Osborne Prolific. Mine only grows about 6-10" per year, basically once I pinch the branch tips in June-July it won't push new buds until next year. I may have to feed it more...

paully22, have you ever grown the Madeleine of 2 Seasons fig from Raintree Nursery? According to there website it performs well in the Northwest.

 Pete

Pete, I have stayed away from "Madeline" after some members mentioned it split real bad.

Pylot - My Osborne Prolific out produce my DK. I have seen a picture of a green Osborne. I think it is from UCD. Likely there could be a few strains.

See my website: http://sites.google.com/site/kiwifruitsalad2 to download a copy of Condit's "Fig Varieties: A Monograph" for what he says about Osborne Prolific!  That name should be dropped, and either Archipel or Rust used in its place.

Pete,

My Madelien De Deux is fruiting for the first time.
I had started it from a cutting about three or four years ago. It had a real bad FMV so I chopped it way down the Fall of 2010. Came back in 2011 looking a but better. I hope this year it will be much better.

Excited to see how the fruit comes out in the long run.

Rafed, best of luck with your Madeleine. I wish I could get every single variety and try them myself but unfortunately its all about space. I'm going to take the other members advice and pass on it but let us know how yours turn out.

Pete,

Most definitly!

I have several more rare ones that are also fruiting for the first time. I will keep everyone posted. My prized Genovese Nero has some brebas on it.

Had to haul everything back in the garage, it's dropping to the low 30s for the next few nights.

I figured things should be o.k. when I return from the next trip out. I will be back on Good Friday or Easter Eve.

No, there's no resting. LOL
