my best tasting fig so far

All I can say that it has a flavor that any fig lover will die have. Perfectly ripe, perfectly sweet, perfect crunch. It gets 10/10 on my rating scale.

Bass, that is a beautiful looking fig.

What kind is it?  And how would you describe the flavor other than "sweet"?  "figgy, mango, banana, cherries, chocolate, cantelope, berries?"

Reminds me of LSU purple, along with the description of the crunch. I might have my first one of the season ripe for me when I get home.

Hi Bass.

I have to say, the suspense is killing me: What type of fig is this, and where can all 644 of us get one?  ;-)

Hope you are well my friend, and when you do have any of these available, definately count me in.  Looks like a real winner.

That looks like Round of Bordeaux to me!

If you right click on the picture and choose properties , it shows up as Ronde de Bordeaux

Herman as usual looks like you have identified it correctly we just need bass to confirm it....

WHY the tease/suspense?

I see similarities to RdB too, but the bended neck is interesting.

Yeap!  I am sure it is Ronde de Bordeaux!  I got that tree and my wife agrees....it is the sweetest fig this year!

Very nice looking fig indeed.

It is ronde de bordeax.

Bass and Snag,

How old are your trees, i.e., how long before you got fruits like this?

[for the +ve id]

I never had any RdB figs before, but one was recently promisied to
be coming my way very soon (thanks to one of above) generous fig persons.

I have this type and will judge them on my own taste buds later this season.
Its because everyone has different opinion of a good fig for there own taste, for example me - i do not care for a fig that has an overpowering sweetness over everythng else but thats me. I also like a seed crunch.
I will also post pictures when time comes as usual.

I must say the fig you posted Bass looks great with that red hue towards its stem.
End of September i may taste mine.

Bass,
How does RdB copmpare with VdB?

I have heard of one famous fig supplier (forgot the name),
that is shipping an RdB as a VdB...

Hi George i know you asked Bass , im online watching some kids on slide you saw as well i see as you post in other thread.

So while here i just mention Adriano on his site states the Ronde is better than Violette de Bodreaux along with being very sweet and cold resistant. A small blue fig.

Great question you ask Bass now we will have 2 opinions.
Hopefully i can also give one late next month .

VdB and RdB only share part of the name. The leaves are compltely different and RdB is unifere (although from time to time it bears some isolated brevas).

I am assuming that VdB=Negronne or very close related. In my opinion, RdB is an excellent fig; productive, early, rain ressistant and good taste but I think that, at least in my climate, Negronne averages a bit better taste than RdB.

By the way, one time Pierre Baud was asked what fig he would save if he only can save one, his answer: Ronde de Bordeaux. Interesting taking into account who says it...

Thanks for the repose(s).
My (EL) VdB is one of my top figs.
Looking forward to compare it with my (future) RdB.

Also, 2 years ago, I noticed that (mislabeled) VdB/RdB (from forgotten vendor)
that was wintered unprotected in a half barrel-raised above ground on
bricks. And it did survive that winter - town was Roseland NJ (NJAES).

ronde de bordeauc and negronne are both very fine, here in austria too.
fruit is resistent to cold, rain, humidity. both varietes survive outside.
rdb is earlier, yesterday I ate my first. rdb seems for me to be even more hardy, but I agree to jordi, I prefere negronne for taste.

I liked both figs, The Negronne I have sets two crops, the breba tasted really good as well. Here are the main differences:

ripening time, The Negronne is in a pot, the Ronde de Bordeaux is in the ground, the RDB ripened now while the Negronne still needs at least 2-3 weeks.
The skin is thicker on the Negronne and not as soft and sweet as RDB.
The Negronne has more acid in its flavor, and if the weather is not hot enough it doesn't develop the best flavor.

Here's some photos I took as it was ripening from green to black in 3 days.

The tree is only about 4'-5' tall. It is a very vigorous tree.

I find RdB somewhat more watery than Negronne. RdB needs to be well ripened, like in the Bass pictures.

Other important thing, RdB tree is much more vigorous than Negronne. Sometimes, Negronne is desperately slow to grow.

Apnoist, I am not Jordi, Jordi (Xon2000) lives in Barcelona and I in Bilbao, near but not the same ;-))

Having tried many watery sweet figs, I would have to say ronde de bordeaux is juicy not watery. It has more juice than Negronne. And Yes Negronne is a slow grower.

Bass, I agree with you, it is juicy, not watery, it is the right word.
