My best unknown brown honey fig

Good day, five years ago, I found a large fig tree in Charlotte.  Back then, we had just about the most perfect weather you could imagine!  This tree was 9 by 9 and was full of figs.  I use to pick these figs on my way to church and again on my way home.   I thought it was a brown turkey because they are every where.  But this one tree was different.  The figs are large, fat, and wide with a flat bottom, open eye and are very sweet.  When ripe, they swell, crack and ooze honey from the eye like Smith.  The tree has 2 crops, late May and late August.

Back then this tree would produce a nice breba crop.   They would wrinkle and dry on the tree!  They were the best dried fig ever.  It does have a red flesh and sorry for not taking photos of the interior but in this photo, every fig was eaten fresh and they were truly amazing!  THey were not rich but they were very sweet.  To this very day, I remember eating these figs.

I have not named this fig yet but I will.  I'm going back to the mother tree today and get more cuttings.  Last winter's brutal attack killed half of it.  The tree was in sad shape.  I've got to save it!  I've got 3 rooted cuttings of it growin now.   I check on it every week but this year no ripe figs yet.  We've had too much rain!  I did fertilize the tree back in March with some organic stuff and it did wonders for the tree.  This fig is truly an unknown.  I might call it... Downtown Honey Brown or Sweet Charlotte.  I'll let you know when I do and post picture on my website.  Here is a picture of the figs I picked back in 2010.  This year, I've decided to slow down on increasing my collection.  I think I will just focus on what did best in last year's winter and this fig.

I am interested in following the progress of this fig.  I think if it does well for you in Charlotte it should also do well for me.

It looks like it is worth saving for sure Dennis, and I like the name "down town honey brown" !!

Wow, that's a beautiful fig. "Sweet Charlotte" would be a good name.

Or UNK Sweet Charlotte

You have a thousand trees and this is not close to any of the ones you have? Wow, right?

True that Grasa.....true that! I visited the mother tree this AM. It had fig on and it was growing nicely. I took some cutting and will start them tonight. Grasa, I'll send you a tree this Fall. In case you're wondering about the leaf pattern. Here it is!

Great looking figs Dennis.

Downtown Honey Brown gets my vote, but those are both great names.

Do you have Improved Celeste Dennis?

I would have to go out and check leaf pattern...

My fig was not quite ripe.
It would darken more with age.

Doug, I have several huge Improved Celeste. It's not Improved Celeste.

yeah those of Dennis have shorter stems.

You have a website Dennis? I didn't know that, if it is related to figs, I would love to visit. That fig must be a special one for you, glad you are propagating it. I like Downtown Honey Brown UNK, it's fun to say.

Surprisingly, two days ago, my neighbor's handy man saw me mowing the lawn and stopped by.  He was admiring my fig trees especially Panachee's striped figs.  He said he has a fig on one of his rental properties.  He described it to me.  We sat out and talked for about an hour.  After confirming the address---quess what?  This guy is the owner of this fig tree!  How cool is that!  He asked me to keep it pruned for him!  HA!  What a blessing this is!

He said he is 65 years old and his mother planted the tree 60 years ago.  He said the tree puts out a lot of figs but last year's winter storm took a toll on it.   He does not like figs but he does like fig jam.  So, I gave him a few jars of my fig jam.  How about that!

Wow, that is cool, Dennis.  Providence!  :)

That is so amazing, Dennis. Your good Karma for caring for that tree! A very nice fig story, and such beautiful fruit.  After pruning, maybe there will be lots of cuttings for trading?

Your jam did the trick and also I am sure your personality helped.

This is great. The figs look great and the story is also wonderful. I just wish there were more sprinting and fence hopping in there. Oh well. I'm greedy.
