My Black Jacks

I know some here do not appreciate the lowly Black Jack, but I cherish their looks and their flavor.  May their fine form and colors be enjoyed.

They are especially large this year, although quite a bit later than last year.

Enjoy!

Marie,
What a beauty!
Thanks for sharing and amazing us :)

Marie, that is amazing size for a main crop fig. Wow! Congrats.

I appreciate my Black Jack, Marie. It's very reliable, and a really good producer here. They are large this year. I had one weigh in at 120 grams. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks guys!  I am glad to know you all are around!  I noticed another posting today for Black Jacks, going to go visit that thread now that I have some time.  Thanks again!

Beautiful !  Hmmm I don't have that one yet.  Can you describe the flavor?  I've only ever had one ripe Celeste that was like a melon flavor.  Be sure and take pics when you harvest!

I'll take a picture when fully ripe for ya Charlie!  To me, they have a jammy rich flavor, sweet, crunchy but not overly so, thin skinned.  Strawberry/plummy overtones.

Wow, very nice looking. Congrats on that!
Can you share your fert method? It seems to work very well.
Good luck :)

Wow, those look awesome... Hope mine turn out like that...

WOW!

Fertilizer I use is Miracle Grow, the original one, half strength every two weeks.  Soil is organic container potting soil with some Vermiculite and some Perlite added to help keep it light since these are container plants here in the Midwest.  I topped off the soil with about 2 inches of mulch to help keep moisture levels more constant and prevent drying out or over heating.  This summer was fairly mild, so on the few hot hot days, I moved the portable fig forest closer to the end of the patio where the neighbor's japanese maple would provide a bit of shade from 3pm til about 6:30pm.  Other than that, they stay in full sun.
I'm currently patiently waiting for the bright purples of fully ripe.  Think another 3 or 4 days!  Supposed to get thunderstorms and or rain later today, if so - I am bringing these Black Jacks under cover so they don't get watered down or split.

I'm thrilled others are appreciating these lovelies!

Can't wait for inside pictures and taste discription!

May you have the will power to wait until those are dead ripe!
Good luck!

Marie: Very nice fig, thanks for sharing. Can you please post the leaf photos of your Black Jack tree when you have a chance? Also, please remember to post a photo of the inside of this fig, thanks.

Best,
Tam

What a beautiful fig!  I too would like to see the insides of a ripe one.  Thanks for sharing.

Here you go, Tam.  As requested a picture of the Black Jack leaves.

Thanks Marie :)

Hey Marie, is your Black Jack a Monrovia Black Jack?

thanks,

Hi Marie
Great looking fig.  Were these grown a greenhouse or did you just move them in after it got cold?

Great job, Marie, those look outstanding!

My little 1st year Black Jack needs to get busy, I want some apple-sized figs out of it next year :)

My first fig tree was a Black Jack from Lowes home improvement. I didn't know much about fig varieties then, but put the tree in the ground immediately. I had 9 figs this year out of which only 3 ripened. The fruits were rather late and the rest were frost bitten due to unusual cold spell we had for a few days in NC early October. The ones that were ripe were a little smaller than the ones you have posted. My avatar is of that tree on the ground.

I noticed one difference though. My black jack figs did not have a neck though.

Marie, thanks for sharing. With a fig that size, you can feed an army.
