Hey Marius,

I just took pictures of a fig at Mario's place that has a very similar growth habit. At this time he does not know the name of it and has not sampled the fruit yet. But it does look like he will have some this season.

It seems to grow two figs at many of the nodes. It also seems to have a very simple non-lobed leaf shape (for the most part).

Are the leaves like that on yours as well?

Where does yours originate from?

Here, check out Mario's tree & tell us how it compres to yours:

Forgot to mention this. Mario's tree also has the habit of producing alot of deformed looking fruit. I think you can see that in a couple of the pictures.

In fact David may have gotten a better shot of the funny looking fruit. How about it Dave, can you post a couple of those?

Hopefully Mario will see this and offer his comments as well.

Thanks Marius I can't wait to see these bad boys when there riped.

Almost looks like a brussel's sprout plant. That is one very productive tree!!!!

I'm curious about the name.

Does it correspond to the taste since Prosciutto and melon is one of the best things to eat in summer. Sweet and salty- perfect combination.

We use to make our own in a smokehouse in Queens.

Does it taste like cured ham???? lol

LOL Cured ham tastes like garbage compared to Prosciutto.  Even the stuff in butcher shops ( Imported as well) doesn't stack up to homemade.

I'm getting hungry. Prosciutto and Fig sounds so good right now!

Marius:Nice Looking Plant.
Congratulation.
One caution word:This young tree was in stress while establishing,so ,being afraid of dying it put out as many fruits as possible to survive trough the seeds, that will follow.
This is natural behavior, but if you leave all those fruits That tree can burn out and die next Spring,so I say,OK they are nice but now remove about half or more out.
That way you will have a chance to see ripe fruits that have Flavor and sugar too.

Herman,i'll remove half of the figs right now.You know,it's very strange...it was a 10'' cutting in march, and now it's a 4' tall plant with 28 figs on it,with 2 figs on every node.I still can't find the picture with the mother tree from Italy(Benevento)...looks like a Sci-Fi think,i was stupefied when i first saw it,huge clusters of big black figs,2 figs on every leaf.   Marius

Good Job Marius, and let us know if the taste is fine, because I am sure they will ripe soon now.

Bill, here are the leaves on my fig. Marius

The similarities seem to be too many to ignore. I don't think that simple leaf shape is very common. And the fact that they both bear 2 fruit per node makes it a real coincidence to say the least. (Mario's tree had 2 each at about every other node).

Did your tree originate from "the old country" Marius?

Hey Marius. You had started a thread about this tree before but I don't think that thread got the attention it deserved.

So, if you don't mind, I was just going to add the link to that thread here. This way others won't miss the additional pic & info about it.

I am impressed that you get your trees to do so well in an area that is really the snow belt. I know because I was born just down the road from where you are.

Maybe it helps that you have more hours of daylight in the summer - ?

Yes Bill,it may be this.My plants got about 8-9 hours of sun every day,i mix the soil with 40%compost made by me from leaves, fine mulch, kitchen garbage and another 40% of aged cow, horse and chicken manure.I water my plants(figs) with the water from a small stream witch is behind my house,in the woods. This is why...they look(are) so healthy.Marius

Ahh, now we're hearing the secret ;) . It's all that good compost you're giving your plants. I saw this kind of healthy trees when I visited Mario. He also uses composted cow manure. I'm sure this has alot to do with your success. Figs trees seem to love composted manures. I'm sure they appreciate the natural creek water as well.

I already have plans to incorporate some good manure into my gardening practices for next season.

Hi Robert, this is my Prosciutto Nero fig,on sept 25th.Figs are soft and big enough...but,they may need one or two more weeks of summer to ripe...will see. Marius

Vivian,i'm using aged manure from the farm, cow and horse manure, mixed with soil(50/50).I never buy bags of soil from the store...every season i'm bringing home one or two yards of black soil from the woods in a small trailer with the same amount of manure from a farm.No chemicals,no fertilizer of any kind...Marius

And one of my Prosciutto nero figs start getting ripe, and guys....this fig is HUGE,HUGE!!    Marius

Hey Marius.
I just wanted to bump this interesting thread to see how this Prosciutto Nero fig turned out for you. Do you have any comments about how it tasted?
Maybe some additional pictures of the inside of the fruit?

Hi Bill, the only one riped fig,the one on the picture,a chipmunk got it....so,i will let you know next season.  Marius

darn chipmunks!!

Hello, Marius.

I'm curious about something.

When you first posted the pics of your tree I counted over 26 figs.
and noticed Herman suggested you remove half to ripen them with him believing there were too many figs on such a small tree.

The question is why did only one fig ripen?

I would have imagined with so many figs still remaining a few would, did the others fall off or dry up?
Did you not have enough heat units to ripen them?
Did that darn chipmunk take some green ones too?

It's a lovely tree, I'm just perplexed as to why on such a robust tree only one fig would ripen.

Again, great looking tree.

Hi Nick. The answer is:first of all,i didn't remove any figs, being too "proud" of my litlle plant, and second,i went in vacation for 28 days and i had nobody to water my pots.  Marius
