My Experiment

I'm experimenting with this clonex red gel. I had bought a 5 gallon VDB from edible landscaping this past fall and it arrived in dormant state no leaves just a good size bush form plant which i make into a tree form this season. Anyways i cut the branches from the bottom they are little thinner than a pencil as i did not want to cut the 2 main branches. I poured the gel into a shot glass and tilted it with stick inside to apply, 1 small stick about 5 1/2 inches long i put in baggie and misted with tap water , the other 2 sticks are 9 an 10 1/2  inches long went into Fertilome Upm mixed with perlite and covered with plastic bottles. They are in warm laundry room on the windowsill facing north which there is no direct sun but room is light. Below is some pictures, its just a fun experiment to see what happens until the ucdavis cuttings arrive then i decide what to do with the new sticks.

I'm with Dan, nice approach. Is that perlite/vermicullite at the bottom of the bag? For moisture?

Aw what the heck i thought i would try something different to keep me busy during this snowy winter we are having, shoot were expecting 4 to 9 inches of snow depending if you live south or north of the city.
Doggone it!

I'm with you Martin, I'm already stocking up on supplies for the Spring. I can't wait - plus the house is over run with fig plants!

Very interesting Martin,  good luck with all the experiments.  Winter is here bad for the next seven days, then it will begin to warm up into the 50's again next week, at least we are getting little signs of the spring coming.  Usually we begin taking things outside on St. Josephs day ( Just tradition ) that is when my Uncle will unbury his fig tree Good luck.  I wish I had more patience to experiment with things, but I get very overworked in my mind.  Ciao Ciao. maggie
P.s.  My husband says I am getting better though, I have been trying to work on my patience.

Steve,
actually no, the bag is empty except for the stick, now that i look at the picture it looks like it but the bag is on top of the pile i had used which is Upm and perlite .

I weighed the 2 cups with the sticks and wrote down what total weight originally was, 1 cup with slightly taller stick weighs 383 grams on a digital scale and the other cup weighs 368 grams. In laundry room each day around same time i weigh and last 2 days they have lost right between 9 and 10 grams of weight each day due to the water evaporating some.
I guess for my curiosity i'll put them on scale each day. If i see any roots in cups or the one baggie in future i will update here.

Its been a week now , the stick in baggie is doing nothing that i can see even with a jewlers eyepiece except callusing on the end. No initials starting nothing.
The one slightly smaller stick in cup (have 2 cups ) the bud on top is trying to open , there are no roots showing in either yet.
I'll just leave everything as is and watch them .

Martin,

Are all three cuttings treated with Clonex? Or (out of the 2 cups) is one with and one without?

Steve, i treated them all with the clonex.
Dan, the 1 cup with slightly larger stick originally weighed 383 grams now is at 334 grams and other cup was 368 grams is now 316 grams thats with the dome on top included with the weighing all the time.

Dan,
no not that im aware , but i did mist it again recently lightly when i put stick back into the bag, i have taken it out a few times as i look at it with that eyepice i have it helps me as i cant see as good as i used too, i bought it long ago to help me when i worked on some model trains and now it comes in handy. The only thing i could tell a little different was the red gel seemed to absorb some into the wood as when i first dip the stick there was more on it than now, there is a sheen on this part so im thinking there is a maybe a real lite coating still there . Oh and on the end part where i originally cut it seemed to have absorbed it also.

Just a little update, its been 2 full weeks, nothing showing on stick in baggie. There is no mold on stick and it seems ok not dried out.
I weighed the cups again and one weighs 302 grams and the other 276 grams.
The small buds on each are still opening very slowly and one is just starting to show a cute tiny leaf emerging.
No visible roots showing by looking at sides of cup yet.

Update, the baggie with stick was tossed it did nothing.
The larger of the 2 cups took about 24 days to do this, small roots i just saw today. Nothing spectacular i suppose compared to other methods. According to clonex site there gel once plant roots somehow feeds the new formed roots i dont know how that works . Here are some pictures. You can see the roots above the letter D on cup.

My last update with pictures,i'm happy after 28 days from cutting some sticks and useing the rooting gel, there doing ok in the cups, in one the roots have reached bottom of 6 inch cup. I also did another type in similar way santa cruz dark. Personally i like this way better than rooting in a baggie for me i dont have to then transplant to cups. From here on in when i root a plant it will just be in a small pot so then it will cut down on the transplanting i have to do its easier for me and i really dont have to see the roots develop in plastic cup, it either grows or it does not. I have gel left so if i root anything in near future i will probably just use it.
I did weigh the cups also this morning and small cup is 210 grams and large one 227 grams. So thats it i just monitor them as im done with the up dates. ; )
