I'm very impressed.  Beautiful plants.  Glad to see another cold weather grower.  I hope to do as well as you.

Remis, your figs are beautiful Came from some good stock, too!) Be careful, looks like you've got the "BUG"!

Terrible case of fig envy here.  What are you feeding those plants anyway?

Cassandra,
I use Miracle gro 24-8-16 fertilizer, 1/4 strength every other watering. I also water my figs once a day with rain water. Some of my plants grew around 5` tall in the last 3 months.

Taking notes.

Good Lord.....+1 on Cassandra's posts, she beat me to it. Thnx for sharing!

They look so darn healthy and vibrant which mine are lacking big time!!!

One question, where do you store them all come winter?!?!? :D

Let me see if I read this right?  You've been growing figs for a year and you have that many???  Where do you get your figs from, and why don't the birds/critters eat them like they do mine?  Which type gave you the most figs?  Very, very cool!

And to think I've been patting myself on the back because my 3" Black Madeira just added four more leaves. Your photo certainly puts things in perspective! Great-looking plants--thanks for showing what's possible.

Fortisi, I store my figs in my garage for winter.

Ireiley,Yes I got my my first fig last Summer and by the end of year i had about 6 fig trees. The biggest tree I got from forum member (Dieseler -Martin)
Also Martin gave me some cuttings past Spring ,Thanks again Martin. Other cuttings came from Ecanto farms and UCdavis.I live in about 7 years old subdivision so there are no squirrels ,trees all around neighborhood are still small.
This is my first season when I will be able to taste few different types of figs so by the end of year I will know witch are my favorites :)
Ken, I just toped my Black Madeira today at 3` tall hoping it will grow few more branches before goes dormant. B Madeira wasn`t doing anything till month of July it was only about 8" above ground with 3 leafes and in one month it grew 3`feet figs are weird . My figs grew way more then I expected.

Remis,
How did you root your cuttings?

I rooted them in spagnum moos in plastic boxes .

I'm reviving this post to report that I've had huge success using the method that Jusalda uses.  I started fertilizing the same way after reading his post and my fig trees grew like crazy.  Wow.  It has been less than a month and you certainly wouldn't recognize most of them.

Thank you Jusalda!

Cassandra i hope you stopped fertilizing them for out upcoming cold weather.

Hi Martin,
what would be the general rule as far as fertilizing in preparation for winter be? When is it best to stop the fertilizing so as to give plants  new growth  chance to harden off? a month, two months before expected dormancy period?
thanks
Grant

I stop 2 months before.

Looks like now is a good time for me to stop.  I hate that the season is almost over.

So beautiful and healthy, Martins unknown is so big and full of life, thanks for sharing nice picstures. No more fertilising from now.

I stoped fertilizing about 2 weeks ago some of my plants stoped growing others like Hardy Chicago ,Nero,Excel are still growing like crazy . I guess I should start new post "how to stop figs from growing" :)
I`m sure they will stop soon as weather soupose to cool down.

Remis you wont stop them sorta speak until it turns real cool out and leaves start turning you will see this on your bigger plants at first usually. Most juvenile plants want to grow even without fertilizer .
I water to a minumum as well at this point but i dont let plants gets water stressed.
In the end i feel it all make a contribution .

Last season there were some folks that had posted my plant wont go dormant.

Again some are just like that when young and will adjust themselves in a season or two but eventually enough cold and less daylight make them, what we do is kinda help them along the way .

Like Cassandra, I also gave Remis' method a try, I'm not sure if it's solely responsible for the growth I've witnessed thus far since I began collecting and using rain water about the same time but a huge thank you anyway. I only wish I began this early in the spring. Between this fertilizing method and the tips I picked up last week at Bill's seminar, I cant wait til next March!!!! :)

They will still be growing vigorous, this is because is still very hot, at least here in Central Penna. Just don't want to give anythign that will encourage too much more growth to go too quickly within the fall/ Winter months. very good you will be happy with such good production next year as well . Ciao
