I started my fig venture in September of 2012 with only 8 plants that I acquired from eBay and Encanto (Jon). After reading tons of information and asking questions on this forum, I finally had enough courage to root my own cuttings this winter. My sincere thanks to Figs 4 Fun family and Jon for creating this forum for all of us figs addict to gather. I couldn't have done it without you guys.

how are the self watering pots working for you?

Excellent work Peter. I see that you are also doing a semi-horizontal training, one thing I would recommend you, is to lower the stakes closer to the soil line. Making the branches semi--parallel to the soil. Also, do remove the apical buds on that tree, if your goal is to train it horizontally. Let the plant to have only 2-4 trunks.

Peter - those self watering pots have been great. I only have to top the water about once in 6-7 days. For bigger plants I may have to water once in 3-4 days.

Navid - Thank you for your advise. I'm actually still experimenting of how I want the plant to look like and which will work best for me. I do like this a lot.

Peter...your trees look great...nice and healthy, and vigorous growers...those self watering pots seem to be working well(you have some pretty good size trees in them)...I think you did a post back during the winter on the construction of those devices...I'm glad you're excited about your trees, you have good reason to be...enjoy your summer.

Martin, Haha.. I know! I need as many dark figs as I can get to cover those ugly grasses.

Peter, what in the world are you feeding those beauties?  Mine are finally starting to gain momentum but it has only recently remained steadily in the 80s.  I give a light dose of miracle grow once a week.

I gave them a healthy serving of rabbit poo with a sprinkle of pelletized lime (soil doctor) on top. Yummy... A few of them also had some compost tea. They seem to like it.

Geez, you've got the disease worse than me now.  Those trees staying in pots or going in the ground?  What type is in photo #6?  Very nice job.

Very nice, there's nothing quite like growing from cuttings. When they fail it's agony but when they succeed it's like your child doing something amazing for the first time. Everytime I look at my trees and baby trees together I feel like I'm right where I wanna be, and I as well have this forum to thank for it's wealth of knowledge and generous nature. Thank you everyone.

Steve - The disease is very contagious :). Those trees will be staying in pots. Photo #6 is Atreano. This past winter the freeze almost killed it. It only had about 5-6 inches of good wood left. But comes spring, it grows like it was on steroid. I think it is still less than a year old.

Those look awesome.  So your double bucket is just a less expensive version of Bill's pots?
