My Figs Australia

Hey all, I thought I would share my collection, from Canebrra Australia. I have 11 varieties total, the 10 below and another which I don’t have a pic for right now for some reason – Prestons Prolific.

All are doing well except for my blue province which is heavily affected by FMV, and is kind of struggling. Another plant I got from the same nursery as a bare rooted plant St Dominque Violette never woke up after winter, so I am reservations about their stock, although they will replace the violette next winter. The third fig I got from their nursery the white nicollina is doing very well, as well as some cherries I got as well, so maybe I got unlucky with these two other figs.

Anyway here they are! I have only had them for about 9 months and have not yet had the chance to taste any of them, so very excited to wait the next few months!

My Mystery Cutting

By gosh (or by George) , your figs are doing fine in Australia. No snow in site on the ground. I miss that feeling.
The Blue Province looks good too even with some FMV.

Great stuff. I'll post some photos soon also.

Great Variants Naikii, I really curious with fruit of White Niccolina and Pink Jerusalem (is this Lounge D'aout ?), wanna share the fruit ? Thank you.

great pictures, thank you for sharing

The Jerusalem broke dormancy weeks after my other plants and hasnt started any figs yet, the Nicolina has a couple of young figs, but I havent yet tasted any.. Here is a closer shot of the young fruit on the nicolina. Are you in Aus as well aikjogja?

I'd love to see some of your figs Bexley, especially to see how your blue province is going compared to mine. And let me know if you find a panache along your travels, it is on my wish list as well as violette de bordeaux, but these are very rare/non existent in Aus I believe

No prob, will take some photos soon, raining here again today!
My blue provence is on the small side but is growing very well and has one fig.
The other dude above is from Indonesia

A very healthy looking tree there..... Thanks for sharing

Hi Naikii, here my Lounge D'aout still young fruit, not yet ripe, I heard other name of Lounge D'aout is Jerrusalem, and you have Pink Jerussalem, for me that really curious to know that Jerusalem fig ripe, I'll wait :), btw I have been Geelong, but I'm not well in Aus.

Hi Aikjogja,
Your figs ressemble my longue d'aout .
My slowest grower sofar . But the figs taste(d) like meat!
but "Longue d'aout" is not a good producer . I tasted my last one two years ago . This year, it lost its brebas to the cold spring, and only had a twenty centimeters growth.

naikii mate its good to see your collection. Where did you get your White Nicolina tree from? Yalca trees from victoria used to sell them before , didn't see last year? Any advice will be appreciated. One more thing I managed to get some cuttings of Panache last year, and its growing well. So probabaly I can share with some members in australia. I will post some pictures soon.

I got my nicolina from yalca, as well as the dominique and blue province. The Nicolina is doing great, but the other two not so much, the dominique never even woke from its bare rooted state...

My nicolina is doing really well however and I would love to trade cuttings! I think she should be large enough by seasons end. A panache cutting would make my year :D

VERY nice!
Thanks for sharing

I see that FMV is already in Australia. Obviously the Australian agriculture department may not be aware of it, and prohibiting import of fig cuttings due to this disease saying that it doesn't exist in Australia.

The funny thing is Bass is that the nursery were they came from have a big name in Austraila,FMV is ever were in the world i think maybe when they get older they look a bit better. One more thing too note is Austraila is know to have maybe the worst insects in the world ask any gardener thats y the FMV spreads.

Here are some photos of my Blue Provence with one fig that you wanted to see.  Sorry for the quality but was a bit rushed when I took them this arvo.

You can't see it well in the photo but I decided to train and prune it the way the Japanese do. Makes sense for better management, especially with fruit fly in Sydney.

In regards to your Blue Provence, don't worry as it is still a juvenile and is only just waking up from Canberra cold.

They are  very nice figs Naiki.
Thanks for sharing and how about its taste Naiki..??

Salam,

Anyone growing black mission or flanders cause i think they love putting out figs plus the closed eye good for them rainy summers.

Hey hey, I'm back!

Today I got to try the first of my figs from my own trees!

There were only a few breba figs produced this year and my White Nicolina just ripened

It was quite a small fig, green with only a slight tint of yellow or white while on the tree. Inside looked totally green

The inside is slightly pink, with not too much moisture

It tasted sweet, tasty, if a little dry. For the very first fig this plant has produced, I have good hopes for the future as the plant matures.

I look forward to trying some of the main crop!

Your FMV problem should go away when the fig tree gets to a certain age!! apparently it's just not old enough yet... Can you give us a picture of your complete fig area so we can see how tall all the plants are?  And thank you for sharing your pictures with us.. loved seeing all those plants...do fig plants cost very much over there??

Also, your MYSTERY PLANT kinda looks like a brown turkey...well, at least it looks like it to me that is... keep us posted ....
thanks

Thanks! I love feeding the addiction :) In Australia plants arent particularly cheap, usually around the $25-30 mark for a young plant

They've grown up a fair bit since that first pic, here is the lot of them today!

Here is an idea of some of their heights, taken with a 1m ruler;

The fig mosaic virus is still holding strong, but as the plant puts out some more leaves it seems to be less affected.. I really hope it overcomes it, it has stunted the plant in comparison to my others
