My first Black Madeira

Wow!!!... For those of you that don't have it, go get it. It's that good. I've had Rdb, jh adriatic, black greek, Brooklyn dark, peter's honey, strawberry, Dalmatie, battaglia green, Bensonhurst purple, sicilian white, celeste and a few unknowns this year and nothing came close. When you first bite into it you get a hint of flowers then berries then something else that's hard to pinpoint but very enjoyable. I think this is what everyone is referring to as "complex" flavor. The skin was tough, the flavor around the eye was most intense.

That is awesome, Pete. Next year for me. Your plant looks nice and healthy too.  Do you also grow Figo Preto?

Very nice!  I really like your little "green house!"

what was your source of getting them

No, I don't have Preto. My two twigs failed to root last year.

I got it from Keith (KK)

thanks i put an order in for ucdavis i dont know if they accepted it i really want black madeira and ischia black

That "green house" was erected yesterday morning. Hopefully the rest will ripened

Very nice

omg my dog just started having pupies her 9-10th litter

Thanks for the review Pete. It's great you are still getting figs this late. My plants lost all their leaves Friday night and Saturday ( yesterday) I put them in the garage. Night night.

It really is an amazing fig! If you can get it to ripen earlier next year the skin will not be as thick.

is it the best variety

My best in taste by far.

ok

In addition to good taste, the late ripening can be a plus. Here's today's Black Madeira harvest--fresh figs in November. Black Madeiras Nov 16 small.jpg

they look good soft sweet and juicy did you grow your tree from a cutting

Yes, from a single UC Davis/USDA germplasm repository Davis cutting received in 2008.

Now officially on my wish list

Started mine this past fall from ucdavis..seems to be a really slow grower , only grew about 10 inch all summer.

Congrats Pete! Would you say plum/strawberry like flavors?

Thanks Frank

I do tasted the plum/strawberry but the floral flavor set it apart from others.
