My First Breba Fig

This is my first Breba fig. It is Atreano(RR). I had covered it with newspaper to protect it from the birds yesterday as they had already eaten two off my Norman's Yellow. This was not ripe enough to pick, but it fell off in my hand when checking it after last night's rain, so.... I do have many more right behind it that I hope can ripen fully. Will keep you guys posted as they progress. I'll post the Norman's Yellow brebas too as they ripen.

Very nice! So you did not eat it?

I need to move! This Northerner is dying a slow death with this weather. Been in the 50's last few days. Finally 70 by Mon. but then back in the low 60's. Ugh!

No Breba for me!

Dom put your trees in pots and store them in an insulated fig room ie garage. Then put them in a greenhouse to get a jump start you will have plenty of breba I have been picking them off to allow only a few to ripen. If the embreyos do not freeze they will pop in the spring. and the greenhouse is cheaper than another house. plus you can start your vegetables also. You will need the greenhouse sooner or later so go ahead and get it so you can extend your season this fall... Good luck just remember when pruning your trees in the fall that the breba are set on the wood you will be cutting off so leave a little.

Ruben, yes I ate it, but as I said, it was still too green and barely sweet. Hopefully, the the next ones will ripen to perfection. I'm anxious to see how they really taste as others have said they are good. Thanks

NYPD, come on down. Definitely better fig weather here, lol. We've been in the low 70's at night and in the upper 80's during the day. A little front came through las night and cooled us down to the mid 60's, but back to 90F today. Got a little rain last night, but not enough. We're in a serious drought here for several months now----about to go broke watering my in ground trees with city water, lol. I have got to dig a viable well in self defense(next project).

I started searching around for them. There's a place on the cape that has them. I have room in the back yard to put one. I could even cut some trees down to make more room.

I was even thinking of building an insulated shed with 2x6 studs for expanded insulation to store more trees. My garage has this set up and it never got below 34- Though it is attached and has a heated room above.

I have alot of choices. It's the head start that I need otherwise its a small breba crop or just main. If I ever get my Fiorone di Ruvo to fruit the breba are that much more important.

Dom I got mine from northeastern tool look at the shelterlogic good price to start off with. I got the 10x20 easy set up and good instructions.
Just had to add a shade cloth as temps were up over 110 two weeks ago..

Thanks!

Were you growing figs or cooking eggs? lol

That's too bad the breba fig wasn't all the way ripe.

I found a breba fig on my LSU Purple this morning.  I hadn't seen it and it was almost ripe, but a bird had pecked a hole in it, so I picked it and ate it.  It almost tasted good.  Wish I'd noticed it was getting ripe.  I'd though I'd picked all the brebas off that little tree, but this one got by me.  Now I'm sorry I picked the brebas off, but there are quite a few main crop figs on the tree.

How bout them birds?

noss

Viv, those birds are a PITA! Sorry to hear the bird pecked your only breba---at least you got some idea of taste. I'm gonna go check my LSU Purple as well to see if they kept any brebas.

Hi Tim!

I'm waiting for da birds to find the blackberry plants I have on my carport and the red raspberries that are with them.  They will probably strip them in the next few days, but they're not gonna get the blueberries because the birdnets are coming out.

I've not gotten several plants potted up because I've not been feeling very well--no energy, but I'm getting it done bit by bit.

The LSU P breba was a complete surprise, or I'd have gotten the bird nets out before the birds could have gotten it.

If you have LSU P brebas, I'll surely be interested in how they taste when fully ripe.

:)

Viv, I looked my three LSU P trees over very well and do not see any. I'm sure they all dropped. There's always next year.

Here you go Dennis, the Atreano was delicious, sweet honey like flavor. Better than the main crop(mild), but not as good as the late fall crop  that slowly ripens in the cool temps.with a rich complex flavor.

The Tena was sweet and just as good as the main crop. Medium sweet, not rich.

Norman's Yellow medium sweet more rich/figgy tasting than the others.

I'll continue to leave these(Atreano & Tena) on the trees each year. The NY is of course breba only. Where else can you eat fresh figs right off the tree in May.
