My first edible Col de Dame Blanc

I had 3 previous ones that split during heavy rains.  This one, even though it has been cool and wet here, tasted wonderful.  I can't wait to taste it when it ripens with more heat and sun.

10 months from cutting to 6 foot potted tree.  You gotta love figs!

That's a great looking interior and impressive growth rate.  Do you use any specialized fertilizing program/products or is that variety just that vigorous?

I attribute the growth rate to variety, and fertilizer regimen.  I have another CdDB in the ground and it only grew to about 4 feet, and produced zero fruit, all my in ground figs are fertilized with mostly goat manure/ barn waste, I say mostly because there is also depending on how far I have to push a wheelbarrow, horse, and chicken manure on some.

With what I know now, I would only plant one year old trees.  My opinion might change next year though :)

I grow all my potted figs in pine bark+ dolomite lime, and fertilize with All Purpose Miracle Grow 1/2 teaspoon+1/4 tsp Epsom salt per gallon of water.  I watered this way everyday from late June until September, then switched to 1/4tsp MG + ~1/4tsp ES.

MG box says something like 1-2 Tablespoons, which I think is crazy.  I did start adding rabbit manure in my special potted figs as mulch about August and the roots grew greedily into it quickly.

I had more fig fruits from my potted starts/ cuttings than those planted in ground that were more vigorous in the spring, which is why I placed them in the ground.
We got at my place a total of a 1/4 inch rain from mid June til late October, I irrigate, but I see now, not enough really. Still learning for sure.

Wow. I have 28 in ground planted in late spring and my potted figs seem to produce lots more figs. Also i have,a CDDG AND its ,Growing LIKE mad in a pot. Well do fig like pot... i say yes,,,

Thanks Ritchie,
I guess I can rule out rain as why the in ground first year figs haven't produced as well as their potted sisters, since you and I started planting about the same time.

I'm not planting anymore in ground until they prove themselves in pots first.

Great Looking Fig, Don! Makes a person's mouth water!! : )

Frank from Bama

Don congrats thats a great fig, many of mine split as temps cooled. For a notoriously slow grower (UCD strain) you seem to have had very nice growth.

You take to good of care of your figs! It's making my mouth water and there is none in stock at the store!

Looks very deliscious!!

If it tastes half as good as it looks I think you got a keeper!

Nice. Congrats! I can't wait to grow this variety myself.

Nice job, Don!

Thanks for all the comments!

I can't say this CdDB is a UCD cutting because I didn't get them from there.

I would say for me it has medium growth.  Sultane, Smith, Vista, St. Rita, JHA, Calderwood and many others grew considerably faster.

At this point I'm just glad I got to taste it, I was thinking it was going to be like Preto, where I watch the fruits for 3 months and still no sign of ripening.

Hi DoncentralTexas,
Sultane is known to be a fast grower. The final tree is said to be huge. Mine grew well, but fruit production so far was weak... I now have "noire de Caromb". I want a darker than violet fig in my garden.
But I'm not sure Sultane will stay by me ... Years will tell . How did your Sultane perform so far ?
6 foot of growth and some fruit production that tree wants to stay by you ...
In ground trees will grow bigger and fruit more in the long run. Potted trees may fruit sooner especially if you're doing the shuffle or greenhouse season extension.
In pots, they grow more compact nevertheless and if one has less space... that helps. For two years, I've been growing some potted in my walkways ...
When you're not in your garden, walkways are a lost space ...

Fantastic!  What a great growth rate!

Don, the best of all worlds. Fresh Goat milk and figs.  Now that I'm a city dweller no 6 A.M. and 6 P.M. Milkings. But also no fresh goat milk and no great fertilizer. Count your blessings.

We enclosed the back garage, so now the driveway on the south side of the house has a lot of wasted space. I have a number of fig trees growing there in pots and they do well there except on the hottest days of summer.
