my first ever fig!

well, the brown turkey has two figs on it that are ripening.   i don't want to pick them too early.  how far away do you think i am?

there are another 45 figs on the tree, i think i can get quite a few if we can hold off to the last of nov before a freeze.

an even more basic question:  how do i know this is really a brown turkey?  i bought it as a little plant from a nursery where i stopped buying because the guy never really seemed to know what variety he was selling.  he said it was a brown turkey, but the other plants he had no idea what they were.  i bought pomegranates, and all he knew is they were pomegranates, etc

With just one fig and partial leaf only an expert could verify if it is Brown Turkey. It looks more purple and lacks the not-so-sharp ridge lines I have seen on other Brown Turkey pictures. My own two years B.T plants fruited late (none ripened) so I cannot tell from my personal experience.

that's one of the issues with this.  it grew so fast this year from a small plant that the fruits are very small and late, so maybe they aren't typical for this fig.  i'm hoping nothing gets these little figs, and i'm going to wrap them in paper and try to harvest next week.

Brown turkeys can be confused with celeste.  Celeste are generaly smaller, however, growing conditions can change that either way.  Brown Turkey generaly take a shorter amount of time to ripen. 

The brown turkey has a reddish eye from an early stage.  The celestes eye is green untill it starts to get ripe ('The New Fig Booklet', Ray Givan; p26). 

Buy the cited booklet, its only eleven bucks and worth the money for starting off with figs, it has helped me alot and I still refer to it.

I am sure you will enjoy these ripe  figs because you have plenty of time with day time highs to ripen these.
I am just waiting for some wind to shake off the frozen few leaves still hanging on before moving them to the garage and later to safety to a cold storage. This year's rooted are already in the garage.

when i harvest, i'll slice and show pics of them with leaves.  then we can try to figure it out.  the green figs do have red eyes, and the eyes are closed, though i don't know if they would be if the plant was mature.  this thing is still growing vegetatively like crazy.  i'm surprised that these figs are ripening at all.   i bet they've been on the tree for 2 months at least and they're only ripening now.

it's great to get a little taste after all the work i've put in this year.

yes if they were on tree 2 months like you said three more weeks of good weather and i think you will be enjoying your figs and most of us will only have a memory of what ours tasted like.
My experience when tree is in first year is rapid growth, figs that come late and ripen late if at all, also leaves tend to be bigger in size than they normally would be when tree is more mature. This year my 1 years olds diplayed big leaves late coming out figs and good growth up to 4 feet before i nipped the very top . Some have figs and leaves as they are in garage for the winter no big deal as they dry and fall and gives me something to do like clean up .
As your tree gets more mature things will generally change such as leaves not being so large on some variety;s and the crop will adjust itself, being a juvenile they don't know how to act sort to speak !

well, one of those 2 was ripe, so i picked it.  actually tasted pretty sweet :).  it's hard to believe that they won't be bigger when the tree is more mature.  they are definitely small by the standards i see posted here.

is this a brown turkey?  the immature figs do have red eyes.

Hi Mike, glad you're getting to taste the fruits of all your labor. Kind of gives you hope for next year,when the tasting should be better, don't it!
