My first fig!!!!!

Yes its ready and appears to be breba fig growing on last seasons wood .

I though the same thing Martin

That would be very unusual for Celeste but not impossible!

That is why I said I have my doubts about it being a Celeste.

The deed is done!

It is mild in flavor, more sweetness less figgy and has a nice soft mouth feel.

I wish I had a few more!!

Does it appear to be a Celeste?

I think I would like another tree that has a bit more fig flavor - open to suggestions

Looks like a nice fig, it will get better as the tree gets older!

IMHO it is not a Celeste!

nice colour. i heard with some figs, brebas are not as good as the main crop. some don't even keep the breba and knock them all down.

i heard that mission and hardy chicago has nice figgy taste.

RKN - How and when will I know if the tree is infected?

I looked at the encantofarms celeste pictures and I don't think it looks like any of them - especially the leaf.

Breba!  That explains the one-fig-ripe phenomenon lol  Looking forward to the main crop!

You can gently dig about 8/10 " away from the trunk and get a close look at the roots, if the roots has some little round things on the roots you have RKN

I have my fingers crossed for ya, But I will add, there is a lotz of trees in this state with RKN....I KNOW!

RKN.. never had it, and never want to have it. one of few reasons i don't put my figs in ground. i don't know what's in them, and i don't want to find out.

this link has few pictures.

OK - so it will be apparent now - I have to leave for work soon, so I will check this weekend.

I am very happy with the growth of the tree - branches coming out near the bottom, plus beautiful healthy looking foliage -  Please everyone pray to the fig gods that my tree has been spared.

Any ideas on the ID of this tree?

Jo-Ann,

The main crop figs would/might be easier to ID

At any rate, it still could be a very nice fig!

Yes Breba as it appear not to be on new growth.
Yes Bullet Pastiliere drops the figs not for yor average grower perhaps but i give tree chance as it kept more fig last season that were very good.

Don't judge it till you see the main crop.  Take a photo just like you did of a few.  Also send me some!

I am very curious to see what the consensus will for the identity of this tree.  For the first 20 years of my life I new purple figs, then I learned about white figs, now a "few" years later I'm learning about the many varieties of figs!  So many figs, so little time....

These figs are more of a mystery then I could have ever imagined!

Here are a few pictures of the tree The first 2 are large - before I changed my camera settings.

Most Celeste in my collection don't do two crops, first.  Second, never seen a blackish purple Celeste.  Fruit looks a bit large for Celeste.  Shape not quite right for ones local to me (neck not long enough).  Interior color not quite right.  Celeste also isn't ripening this time of year for us, still got another 6 weeks to go.

My best guess is it's a relative in the ballpark of Black Mission, Black Jack or other genetically similar.  Curious to see main crop.  May be able to supply more specifics when it arrives in fall.  Good news: these pics pretty much rule out about 80% of the possibilities, which is a very good thing

Just saw this thread. Looks like LSU Purple.
