My first fig

  • Tex

So I got the idea that it would be a good idea to grow a fig.  Basically it was me one day remembering the fig tree that my grandparents had on their property and how much I loved eating them.  So I did a bit of research and procured an LSU Purple(I hope).  Fast forward 3 weeks and it looks like I have a pest or something eating on the leaves.

Im not a gardener and have no experience at all.  Can any of you fine people help a complete newbie out?

Welcome e to the forum. I'm no expert, but if it were me, I would start by clipping those leaves off.

Even the new growths on top?

No just the infected/burnt leaves.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I did what you suggested and now all I have to do is wait I guess.  This isn't going to stunt the tree is it?

The tree will be just fine. By clipping those ailing leaves off, more energy will go towards the plant and the other tiny leaves.

Hi Tex,
IMO, those leaves just suffered wind and sun damage, so no need to take them down,  but ho well ...
I would use a bigger pot for that tree and give her some fertilizer to help her bounce .
How old is that tree ? For how long as she been in that pot ? What did you use as a potting media ?
Welcome to the forum and Good luck with your new tree !

Im not sure how old it is; its been in that pot for just under two weeks coming this monday.  I used a tree/shrub soil from wal-mart.  Any suggestions on what type of soil/fertilizer I should use this early?

Get a magnifying glass or check really close at those tiny white specks.  Could be nothing but I'm thinking could be mites of some sort.

Congratulations Tex on your first fig and welcome to the forum :)

Hi Tex,
For my trees, I'm using compost ( standard dirt for tomatoes seedlings ) from the nurseries and 10/10/10 "blue-bullets" for the fertilizer, a closed hand full per month - in a pot, use half of this quantity - adapt quantity to the size of the pot.
For this year, you could give one shot of fertilizer but then you need to let the tree off, for preparing the coming dormant season ...

Hello Tex,
Welcome to the Forum Community.

I agree with Jdsfrance, the leaves look old and are damaged, they may have some rust, but they don't really look diseased. Its better to keep the leaves to support root growth. You could just cut off the dead portions of the leaf with scissors, straight cuts across the fewest number of veins. The only reason to remove leaves inoculated with rust is to slow the spread of spores to other leaves, but spraying with fungicide and a few days of dry weather will usually halt the spread.

Your new tree looks like it may only need to planted in a better potting mix and fertilized. Any well aerated fast draining potting mix will work and the fertilizer needs to contain Macro and Micro nutrients.

If you read thru the "Start Here" topic posted at the top of the 1st forum page, http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=6111601 you'll find lots of info. You can then do a forum search for potting mix and fertilizer that many members use on their figs. This is my potting mix recipe and fertilizer schedule, http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1283647012&postcount=15

Potting mixes and fertilizers are different for almost every member. A topic on fertilizers, http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=6975328 and a topic on potting mixes, http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=6416224
Good Luck.

Welcome!  And what AscPete said, especially about the leaves.   ;)  The undamaged portions of those leaves are still providing food for the plant.

Welcome to the Forum
first thing that i would do is to clean the leaves with water.
after that i would cut the bad part of the leaves off ( not all the leaves and you are doing that just in case...)
use scissors.
move the plant to a place wher it gets indirect sunlight. if you cant get that, move the
plant in the house and put it by a window without full sun

It could probably use a bigger pot in the near future. Lsu purple is one of my fasted growing trees, not the prettiest but one of the fastest. It has a sprawling growth habit. Good luck with your new tree, you picked out a good one. People say they don't reach their peak till they are 4-5 years old so don't worry if they don't taste great right away.

Well, I just got back from the store.  Got a 3qt container some Miracle Gro potting soil and some generic fruit tree fertilizer.  Fertilizer said to put down a pound of the fertilizer for ever 1 inch of growth but I have no growth so I didnt know how much I should put down?  So I ended up doing as jdsfrance suggested and put down a handful.  I did end up cutting off the leaves but I did this before I was told otherwise.  I guess I'll see how it turns out.
