My First Fig This Year (with Pics)

Here's my first fig this year.

It is a Hardy Chicago. It had a nice fig flavor and soft texture, but was not as sweet as I hoped.

I picked it earlier than I should have because I could not wait anymore, and we're supposed to get a lot of rain tomorrow.

I have plenty more swelling up on the tree, so hopefully I have more to eat. Up here in Massachusetts I didn't think I would get any with the year we've had.

Best of luck with everyone's harvest.

Joe

Hi Joe,
yes it was picked to early for sure looking at inside and outer skin, but i understand the temptation, hey if not this year wait till next year as the taste should improve as tree matures along with good weather and you pick when fig is darker and drooping nice on tree, and soft too touch and has a beautiful nice color, and to the touch feels like squeezing a babies cheek, you give fig a gentle twist and it comes off willingly for it wants to please its grower
then you cut open and see what looks like a liquid gel on the red meat and seeds, you slowly bring it to your mouth with anticipation,  now dont drop it whatever ya do  (remember the 10 second rule if you do ) its in your mouth and you chew slowly very slowly and savior the moment for its a fig your fig what you grew and now you get to enjoy the accomplishment, after the taste wanes in your mouth you say to yourself i want more for this is truely something.

Best Health

I took Dieseler's advice and now am letting my figs get really ripe before I pick them.

Here is a ripe one I just picked and ate.

It makes a big difference.  This one was much sweeter.

Joe

P.S. Thanks for the tip Cecil.

Joe,

You don't have to use photobucket on this forum

Just look down at the bottom of your post and use Manage Attachments

Hi Joe,
good that you waited a little longer. My experience with my trees as they matured more the figs tasted better up to a certain point so perhaps your in for a even better treat next season if weather cooperates!
Next season hopefully is a better fig year for most of us.  Concerning your picture and photobucket.
I use the img code in photobucket and make sure your signed into your account .
Like Mike E used to say on TV cereal commercial "try it you'll like it" !
