Peter's Honey Fig

Was a bare root whip put in ground in February. I've been pinching the figs of as I've read I should do this. The leaves have gotten big and it forced me to put a support to hold it up. The large leaves kind of act like sails.

Anything else I need to do or just let it be till dormant?

Thanks

EDIT: Don't know why I can't get picture to show up. I pasted HTML code and used the "insert" picture option. The highlighted text should take you to picture though.

Welcome justaguy.
Hope my fig trees don't see the beautiful well kept bed your tree has. They'll all be wanting one.
Looks like you're doing a great job. Though I really know nothing about your climate .
I was advised I could leave a few figs on a new tree but to pinch them off near the terminal growth, so the tree could go on getting bigger.(If that's what you're aiming for)
Dave.

Thanks Dave.....San Jose is a Mediterranean type climate, warm dry summers and mild wet winters. I am going for maximum growth, I've pinched off dozens of figs already :( I left one on to ripen though. I wasn't sure if you are supposed to summer prune a 1st year fig or not figured I'd get some input.

Alan, I've tried that. For me it just shows up as a broken picture icon when I enter the link. This is only forum I post on that I can't get pictures to show up. I use the new Firefox FWIW.

ohjustaguy,

Nice work!
I see you take pride in what you do.
Very healthy tree and I bet the scent for that Basil fills the air.

Now all you need to do is turn that one fig into another dozen or so different figs. Surely you don't have plans on just having one do you?

Very nice, thanks for sharing.  What do you have growing on the trellis?

very nice. welcome to the forum

what is the reason for the sideways half buried clay pot?

Rafed - Thanks, I actually have a 2nd fig, VDB. I messed it up by putting it in a half wine barrel with the native CA clay and it got waterlogged. It's doing better since putting in the ground but far behind the PH pictured in this thread. I might have room for another fig down the road.

Benin - It's a Passionfruit "Frederick" vine. I built that trellis out of a deck that I ripped up that was surronding the cicrcular brick "planter" that the fig is in. It actually had roses when I moved in. I gave them away on CL and ripped the deck up around it, found electrical and PVC pipes running into the "planter" so it was a water feature of some sort at one time. I dug down and found no bottom so I'm guessing they broke it out when the put roses in.

Theman - I actually broke that pot when I dropped it. I put one half in the fig planter and the other half in another tree ring. I was going to try and glue it together but people kept saying they liked it as a feature and it kind of grew on me so I just left it.

I'm trying this on IE but I fear the broken icon image will show up. In case it does, links as well:

Frederick Passion Fruit
Trellis

ohjustaguy -- I'm very impressed by the trellis you built!  Forgive my ignorance, but what are those concrete footings you're using?

Passionfruit flowers are amazing!  They look like something from Star Trek :)

They are deck footings/deck post anchors/4x4 redwood posts. We have mild enough weather here in San Jose that it will be okay. Anywhere with tornado/hurricane/nor'easters this is not a good idea and usually a code violation. I built the three middle posts parallel to the fence posts which are sunk into the ground. I'll probably attach those three posts to the fence posts just to be safe.

Yes, passion-fruit are crazy looking flowers.....don't know what zone you're in but there is a hardy passion fruit called Maypop that gives edible fruit (and cool flowers) if you are interested. Most other varieties are zones 9 and up.
