My first figlet!

Here it is, my first ever figlet! (with figlet #2 lingering beneath it)

It's a Conadria cutting I started about 5 weeks ago (thanks figfinatic!).  Since I've never seen a living fig fruit in person, I'm leaving it on.  Its entertainment value to me far outweighs the detrimental effect it'll have on the tree's growth.  Besides, I'm growing this in a greenhouse with a 6'6" ceiling, so I'd actually prefer some stunting.

This is really exciting for me.  I had gotten some 2-inch tissue culture fig plants from Wellspring about 19 months ago, and they had grown into big bushes with 1.5" trunks, but had yet to produce any fruit.  I've read that tc plants often take 3 years to start producing, but I was also worried that perhaps there wasn't enough light getting into the greenhouse to trigger fruit production.  Seeing the baby figlets on my Conadria eases that worry, and reassures me that I'll be able to successfully fruit figs in my greenhouses.

Yay!  :)

Congratulations !!!!  Hope Great Things for its Future, and Yours.....Fig Collecting is Fun.

very nice!! :)

Congratulations!  The first one is always memorable!  Next comes, how do I know when it's ripe?  When should I pick it?  Lots of answers here in the forum, but figs do get tastier once the tree is more established.

Enjoy!

Aloha, everyone!  I'm in the same boat with you, Greenfin.  I've never heard of a fig, let alone seen one in person. You'd think living in the tropics I'd have heard or seen a fig before.  All I knew was that it was a cookie.  Then a friend of mine on the Big Island brought some fresh figs over last year, and BOOM, that was it!  I knew right then that I had to either go back to his place for more or grow some of my own.  Now I've got an first year Excel popping little figlets all down this branch!DSC01284.JPG
