My First Figs

Okay, I'm starting over. Here's a picture of the only Atreano Breba that held on. Was watery and tastless. Main Crop coming on. The other picture is of my Celeste.

Very nice pictures Tim, thanks for posting. The pictures only make me want to go see you more than ever. That's a nice layout you have. When does the driveway sales begin?
"gene"

Gene, I'll probably have to wait another 2 years to have enough to sell, but should have plenty for my friends to taste. Looks like we're gonna have a lot of rain for several days starting this evening. This comes at the wrong time for figs, but I'll take what I can get. We're down about 13" from normal this year. Even my shallow well has gone dry.

Tom, I hope we all get to confirm Willis varieties this year. I know for sure the Panache and Vdb. are right, but still have to confirm the Black Jack and Italian Everbearing. I'll take a couple pictures of the greenhouse and post today.

Tim,

Very Very nice pics indeed. Your fig trees look perfect!
Are you sure you live in Texas? I don't get to see too many beautiful lawns like yours. Great work Pal.

More pictures:

The greenhouse is only 14x14 but has shelves running down each side w/ stairstep shelves sitting on top that I made out of stair stringers and decking boards. Gives a lot of space for small pots. As you can see, I was into Cactus & Succulents for a while, but would be great for starting figs in the winter. Has a thermostatically controlled fan that is set at 90F so it runs all day. I have it shaded with 60% shade cloth, but it still needs more. Gets about 100F during the day with the fan running.

Real nice set up Tim

Sal

Thanks guys for the nice comments.

Rafed, yes I live in Texas. I have not watered the lawn at all during our drought, but we have a lot of dew, I guess due to the high humidity. Everyone here has St. Augustine lawns---pretty much grows wild and I never fertilize it either. I did make that mistake about 10 yrs. ago, lol!

Tom, this came as a kit from a local guy(no longer with us) who would make them to your specs, so, I can't take credit, except that I did assemble it. It has survived two hurricanes unscathed. I have it anchored at each corner. It is really under used as it gets so hot in there, even in our mild winters. I need to figure out how to better regulate the temperature swings. He sold an evaporative cooler to use with it, but he told me that they didn't work all that well here with our high humidity, so I opted out. I have no experience with snow, but it seems like the ridges would accumulate snow, but there is no way to attach the polycarbonate to the dome except in that direction. It really is durable compared to fiberglass or greenhouse film.

What a nice looking greenhouse and great pictures.
You write  I have no experience with snow.
I do . lol
The snow might stiick right at the peak of greenhouse if it comes down wet and suddenly freezes  the ridges may hold some snow but those are shallow looking and surely wont bring down the greenhouse in my opinion in Texas unless you get a lot of it and keep getting a lot of it which i dont see by your statement you have no experience with snow.   ; )
Course go North East in January if you would like to get some experience !  ; )

Thanks for the advice about the snow Martin. If it ever happens here, I'll be prepared.:-)) I hope you knew I was responding to Tom's comments about snow. As for the invitation to experience snow, no thanks! I had enough of that years ago when we used to ski in Colorado. I'll keep my hot, humid, mosquito infested climate, lol. The figs like it. I actually would like to experience real seasons other than Summer & Winter, though. Hope you have a great fig season, my friend.

Hi Tim Years ago I was invited to check out a hydroponic tomato green house here in FL. for work. If I remember correctly he had a chiller system set up which would drip chilled water on a thick horse hide or horse hair woven mat with a fan behind it blowing the cold through there was a pan to catch the dripping cold water and it would pump back through. I don't remember it it had a float switch hooked up to keep the proper water level but I do remember it was thermostatically controlled to keep desired temp for day and would switch for a night time temp. It was an awesome set up as he sold his toms to Publix. Each plant would produce 60-80 lbs each grown in perlite sacs 3 plants to sac just in case of a disease you only lose 3. The plants would be 6-7 ft tall and then trained to grow back down

Just a thought I know you can get chillers for an aquarium not sure of proper size for that though

Hi Tom, I think the square aluminum(1") tubing is pretty readily available. Looks like he bent it with a pipe bender kind of like a hoop greenhouse. The polycarbonate is attatched easily with self taping screws that have a rubber gasket on them, along with the corrugated rubber? strips to seal up the gaps. The fan is  16", 1/4HP, moves 2175 CFM so it moves a lot of air. I only open the two front windows so the fan pulls the air across and out, but when it's 98 F outside, that's as cool as it'll get. The height in the center is 8'. Thanks for the cactus link. I'll look it over when I get a chance.

Sal, that's sounds like a wonderful idea. I'll see if I can find some info. That'd be a nice way to grow tomatoes free of stink bugs. They are eating my late tomatoes up. No matter what or how often I spray, they are back the next day---like they are immune. To make this legit---How about 'dem figs?

That's a textbook description of an evaporative ["swamp"] cooler....something that we  in the high desert of NM know very well. That just sparked some ideas for when I get a greenhouse set up.

Thanks Paul, I'll see what I can find.

Tim,

Any Lowes or Home Depot in our neck of the woods has evaporative cooler parts [you could probably have them order things and ship to your store], but here's a site that has parts [so you become acquainted with them]

One concern:
Evaporative cooling works great for those of us in dry climates...adding moisture to the air cools it effectively. However, in humid climates I am not sure how effective it would be. However if it's being effectively used for greenhouses, it would mean that someone knows how to make it work.

Thank you Paul, I'll check it out.

Tim, you have beautiful healthy trees, wow! My Atreano is just like your first pics. very nice, not tasted yet though.  Don't want to rush a northern summer away. Ciao  what beauty you have.

Tim:Why ,do you saY,QUESTIONABLE SOURCE,WHEN ABOUT gUILBEAU,AND sAL cORLEONE.
yOU GOT THOSE CUTTINGS FROM ME AND THERE IS NOTHING QUESTIONABLE ABOUT YOUR TREES.
tHOSE Pixes show, exactly a little Guilbeau ,and a little Sal Corleone,so I can see you did not mix the cuttings.
Other than that you are calling me a questionable source and you also call the originator of those cuttings,George Michalev, the same way, because he is the one I got the mothers tree in trade from.
You might have been having someone saying that those trees are not ,Sal Corleone and Guilbeau.
If so,please make  a new post with large pictures of your Guilbeau, and Sal Corleone, and let George Michalev,Dr Leon Deprest,Gene Hosey,Dan,in Louisiana,Henry lyel, and others take a look of the pixes, and say,if they are or are not What the name say they are.
Sal Corleone have very particular leaves, and so does Guilbeau.
I can clearly see you got the right trees.

Herman, you are my mistaken my friend.:-)) I bought my MBVS (which I haven't posted pictures of yet) from you, but the questionable varieties all were bought from mifi4fun (AKA--Zergas) on eBay. Don't know how or where this got started, but, I'm not guilty. Any variants I received from you,  or any of those named, I would not question(in fact, I would be extremely proud that they came from any of you). They would be listed along with (Herman) or (Leon), etc. proudly at their side. I am glad to know those I have posted as questionable look right (actually I am thrilled). Thank you!I bought these all before I joined this forum and before I knew any better. No problem on my end my friend!:-)))

Maggie, thank you for the compliments. It's nice when your efforts get validated. The Atreano grew to 7-8' last year and almost as wide.(first year in ground). It was planted in an area where I had a chicken pen years ago and I'm sure that's why. The joints were 4-6" apart on the stems, lol. It did produce quite a few figs late  in the fall that were fairly sweet, but the weather was cool. The main crop has not started ripening yet this year(just the one breba I posted), so I'm hoping it will improve a lot in the summer heat. I'll be sure to post when the time comes. Hope you are feeling better.
