My first rooting

This is Matt's clipping from Sheepshead Bay (Thanks Matt)

This may be crazy but I decided to do one early. I first went to the refrigerator vicinity to seek a start up environment but I really did not see this of any use. The house is set for 68 degrees and according to my readings, ideal would be around 80 to 85.

I found a heat source that is reliable in the attached garage. I improved it a little by adding aluminum duct work. I placed the duct work close the the hot water pipes and the furnace duct so it will warm the duct that I placed to a nice level and fairly constant.

Within five days, I am seeing root initials :) I ordered some Perlite and I am hoping to have great success with my first rooting this way. 12341566_10206910974366607_9114909542496755702_n.jpg  12301455_10206910974526611_1134281278271965893_n.jpg  12342350_10206910974566612_3373160549746515368_n.jpg

Looks great Peter. Very unconventional method but seems to be working very well for you, hehe. Those root initials look good, you should probably have roots shortly and can get them into some medium. What do you plan on transferring them to, just perlite or perlite mixed with other medium?

Love it :)

I don't know to be honest with you, I am reading a lot here. I am open for suggestions.

I have Clonex and Perlite on the way to me. I may consider picking up a good quality petemoss .

BTW all my trees have names, this will forever be Matts from Sheepshead Bay :)

Coir is a great medium. You gave to hydrate it first then sqeeze the water out of it a handful at a time. Water comes right out. Very easy. Dont let your unused coir stay in wet bucket. Go ahead and squeeze all the water out of it use what you need store the rest. I got sheeps head too.

Thanks, would you add that to the Perlite? is so, what kind of mix, 80/20?

Peter, coir and perlite together are good, you can do coir/perlite at 70/30. Some people also mix promix or another soil-less medium with extra perlite for drainage. Perlite by itself has been done but doesn't have as much good results as it would with another medium, especially if it's fine particles. Just make sure not to overwater :)

Thanks! I will do that

Probably a weird question but will brand new roots wipe off the bark? I am trying to root a manzanita cutting and can't tell if it's rooting or if it has perlite stuck to it

Peter
Be careful with the amount of moisture in that bag. I would open it here and there and get some fresh air into the bag. I'd also be careful that the bag doesn't get too hot and cook those cuttings
Good luck and keep the thread going

I wouldn't wipe a cutting after apparent rooting but I can't see why you can not dip it in water to clean the area to give you a better visual.
