My First Stella

Got this one from Burnt Ridge, but understand it originally came from One Green World. Huge 3" long, was very ripe, sweet, deep flavor reminded me of molasses a little.

Yeap Tim, you are correct!  I got a 3 year old Stella and I picked 2 big long figs today.  Last year I  only got one fig from this tree and it oozed honey from the eye and it was very sweet with a honey color.  This year, the interior is cherry red and very sweet.  I was so please at this fig that I bought 2 more!  cheers, Dennis

i am thinking that the trees with stella like leaves don't like the heat as much.  mine has grown farily well, but it's not in that all out grow mode.  i got mine from one green world as well.  no figs yet, but that isn't unusual for me at this time of year in small plants.

Hey Dennis,  I glad to hear that. Maybe it'll be better next year. It's still small about 3', but I've got one left that should be ready in next day or two. I probably won't let it make any more figs this year so it can concentrate on growing.

Hi Mike, I think this is a fairly slow growing tree as well. I kept it potted for a year(potted up couple times). Planted it in the ground early spring on the south side of my garage and it has grown about 1 1/2' so far this year. I am not as diligent as you are with the fertilizer. Just threw a handful of triple 13 around it after it started growing. Probably could use another dose now. I haven't noticed the fingered leaves  varieties being heat/sun sensitive. Maybe Florida sun is just more intense would be my guess.

the shape of the leaf would collect less sun given the same area, as opposed to a celeste.  my stella is probably about 2 1/2 feet tall, all new growth above the ground.  just doesn't have the vigor of the truly fast growing varieties.  maybe this fall, when it gets a bit cooler, it will be another story.  that's only a guess on my part.

Tim,

I purchased a Stella about 7 or 8 years ago. It was my first fiig ever!
This is how it all started. I don't have that same tree anymore but I had it for about 3 or 4 years before it got destroyed.

Who would have known then I would have about 100 variants at this time.

It is a very good and hardy fig for anyone in any part of the U.S. or Canada.

Another member that lives near by just purchased one about two months ago and gave it to me. It now stands about 4' tall.

Keep'em coming Tim! You're on a role!

Tim, I forgot to mention that our Carolina sun was scorching the leaves on my stella.  Mine is in a huge 30 gallon container so I relocated it to my deck about 2 months ago.  Now it is growing more and has a 2 foot sucker shooting up in the middle of the tree.  But it is slow growing tree.  I love this tree!  cheers,

Dennis,

It's funny how most variants act so different in other parts of the country.
The Stella I used to have grew quite fast here in Michigan.

The one I just got was no more than 15" tall when I got it, Now it is about 4' tall.

Good luck with yours too.

I won't see ripe Stellas till sometime in September. It is one of my later figs, here.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I hope you all have good luck with this one. Picked the second one today and it was good too. Now time to fertilize again and hopefully get some good growth.
