My first taste of RdB today (with pictures)

I got to pick two RdBs today from my 5 gallon self-watering system.  One was split while the other was cracking.  I haven't tasted too many varieties, but this one is a delicious 9/10 fig.  The split one was a bit riper and had more concentrated flavors.  Just a wonderful fig!  The aftertaste lingered for a while too.  It may have split due to the continuous feed of water to the roots below, but it was very acceptable.  I should have another one to enjoy tomorrow.
Sorry for the watermarks but I'd rather not see these being used without my permission on ebay.

It is definitely a keeper and I will keep bothof mine, thanks for the photos and information, looks great!

Good idea, Wayne.  I have an air layer that should be ready to remove in the next couple of weeks.  Glad I made a copy of this gem.

Congrats, Frank!
Mine is still a baby, maybe some figs next year.

How did you make the watermarks?
I was thinking about the same but have not got to the point of actually making a design and production.

Thanks Igor.  I use Watermark Factory 2 for my photos.  Great little program.

Congrats Frank. Makes me think that I need to make a backup this winter.

Trying to Air-layer my own backup as it has lived up to reputation here. taking forever to show roots however, really hope it takes as if not I might never taste another as it is my wife's favorite. To bad it is so easy to identify or I would move it out and swap in a imposter.

Way to go Frank! They're a must in anyone's collection. I kept two in pots and experimenting with one in ground.

I had a fig like that but it tasted not so sweet and had a dark fig taste to it. Hmmm... small too but I didn't like it much for the lack of sugar. It might not be RDB.
Congrats on the figs!

I would rather grow 4 trees of RdB - it is really that good - than 8 other average tasting figs.

Tomorrow might be an 'air layering' day. :)

Nice work Frank!
I should be getting to sample my first RdB in few days. RdB will  be the winner of "The first main crop fig in my yard" award this year. Actually it will be the first 4 or 5 unless another fig decides to kick it into gear. I am glad I made a back up of it also last year, but it's not quite a backup per say, more like an experiment. I am going to put it in ground next spring.
Obviously you are going to personalize your photos however you want. I have to say though, I hope this style of watermarking doesn't catch on..very distracting.

Strudledog, my air-layer took forever to root last year as well. It wasn't the best layer scenario but I made it work. I waited until it went dormant and then cut it free and potted it, it was not heavily rooted. It came out of dormancy like the rest but then grew slow for a very long time, which was still better than nursing a cutting.

Calvin,
Please post the results of your RdB!
Your cutting is in a 3 gal pot now, growing strong. It really likes the SoCal sun.

That is another bonus to this variety.  It has ripened before everything else, other than Gino Black.
I'm thinking I will do the same with my air layer, but as a buried pot.
I won't make it a habit with the watermarking, but the pics came out so good, I thought I'd apply it this time.  ;)

Congratulations Frank and thanks for sharing.  I just got my first RdB plant so hopefully next year for me.

Looks good

Susie,

About 1.5 years old.  I started the cutting in late winter of 2013.  Moved it to 1 gallon pot and it was barely growing the rest of 2013.  For 2014, I moved it to a 5 gallon bucket and used Pro-Mix BX mixed with Osmocote and placed it in my self-watering gutter system and it simply took off.  Same results for the other 13 trees.  I've heard the 2nd year is when trees will really take off with growth, so this makes sense since all my 1st year trees barely grew.

are the bordeau figs related? i have a VDB inground now. should i also have a RDB, or is the taste similar?

I haven't tried VdB yet, but they are in the same family.  I look forward to comparing them next year if my VdB puts out some figs.

I asked the same question in another thread this month where the poster had both. He said I should have both in my collection and I do.

Just as an FYI VdB plants are like $10. Several RdB's sold on eBay for $200+ this year

thanks rich. do you remember who posted?

well, at those prices, no hurry. i refuse to pay that much n i can wait til prices drop.

Your pictures made me go shake the devil out of my RDB and tell it get with the program!
