My first VDB

Here are some pics of my first VDB.  I was really looking forward to tasting this fig, but I gave it a 5, it was pretty bland.  Granted, this is a young tree that I just started from cuttings this spring.  It is growing in a 3 gal black nursery container.

I think it would have been better if it could have stayed on the tree for another day or 2, but you can see the eye started to blow open, so I had to pick it.  As typical with FL summers, it has been pretty rainy.

Hopefully this fig will get better with age.  Plus, I am planning on moving some of my potted figs to the ground, so this should help with the rain impact.

Looks good Mike, taste should improve. The splitting makes me nervous since I live south of you and it has rained every day for days. hot and humid. The sun will shine long enough to raise temperatures around 92-96 every day.

I hope one day to add this one.  Since I only plan to have  three I must be very selective...  Zone 4  shuffle  ;0(

Congrats

Anyone else growing this variety in the southeast have issues with splitting?

M5allen, it will get better, I've had VDB figs that were incredible. My own VDB produced its first fig this year and it was very bland. However it was in a pot that was mostly in the shade transition due to a move, so that was expected.

The proof is in the cut open picture.  The "meat" of the fig (the part between the pulp and the skin) is thin and translucent.  That means you let it go long enough.  The rain diluted its flavor.  If you want you can cover a small potted plant with a plastic bag.

We have a large potted Negronne and the first figs off it this years were bland as well. We are getting very sweet and flavorful figs now.

I live in south east La and I had this problem with my negronne and aubique petite. Even when there wasn't rain,  just from humidity and they are both in ground.

Interesting Ryan.  So did you get rid of those varieties?

Not yet, this is their first season in ground so they are still young. I will give them another season or two to improve.  I am keeping my fingers crossed. If they keep on doing the same thing I will replace them with something else. I can see the potential they have so I am trying to keep an open mind about them.

Update, the summer humidity is gone now and I had a chance to let a VDB ripen with some dry weather.  It was much better.  Such a beautiful black fig with a sweet berry taste that left a candy sweet flavor lingering on my tongue after I ate it.  Much better than my first VDB.
