My front porch Third year Gino fig

It did not grow a lot because of very poor soil and herbicide use in the past, but it hold in one piece trough last 2 winters, because it can't be protected in the winter in this location, due to City regulations.
This make a fig similar to Violette in shape and color, but it has different leaf shape, and it does not split in rainy conditions, like we get here often ,at the time of ripening.
Yesterday we had rain, and you can see the fruits today.!!!!

Hi Herman
thats very impressive what you mention about this type tree  !
Do you think this one for you may be the most winter hardy for you yet.
Please let us know how those figs on tree taste for you.
Thanks

Hi Herman.  You have a remarkable collection.

The colors on this fig are exceptionally vivid, very beautiful.

This fig seems to have held up to the cold weather just fine, and is producing a very good looking crop this year.

Hope they taste as good for you as they look.

Thank you for sharing these great pictures.

Best wishes.

John

Martin:I do not know if it is hardyer than Hardy Chicago,Because winter here is not very very cold.
Last Winter it was 8F,and 2 years ago it was 10 F,so I do not know if it can make it outside in Chicago, like HC is Known to have been grown outside there.
It is cold hardy, but how much, that is unknown.

Also if someone starts with a cold hardy fig then it is easyer to protect using many ways of protecting, even in extra cold climate.
How it tastes:It is an improvement on HC,with darker leaves fruits, and darker interior,at about the same weight.

Thanks for reply .
The description sounds like a winner to me coming from you direct.
Its a fig i put on my list .

Herman, were did you get your Gino's fig from?

How does it compare to Marseilles Black VS in taste, size and when it ripens.

Thanks. Bob

From William Class ,an Egg Harbor,NJ,Gardener.

Herman, thanks for the information. I checked the historical weather data for Egg Harbor, NJ. The weather bureau is using the Atlantic City bureau for Egg Harbor.

I figure this was going to be another dead end lead. That's because I figured Atlantic City had to be at least a zone 7 and that Egg harbor sounded like one of those micro climates next to the sea shore that would be a zone 8.

But, I checked the data anyways. To my surprise Atlantic City actually appears to be even more colder then your location. The three coldest winters in Atlantic City was minus 8 degrees Fahrenheit in 1996, minus 8 degrees in 1987 and minus 9 degrees Fahrenheit in 1985. These are the low winter records for the last 25 years, for Atlantic City, NJ.

You indicated your Gino's fig had no winter protection in its third year, at your place. What type of protection did you give it during it's first and second winters?

Did it die back at all in it's first and second winter at your place?

Herman, this appears to be possibly another good find from you, for being both winter hardy and good tasting??

Thanks for any additional information on Gino's fig

Bob

Do you know were the tree originated at, in the United States?

I have no more information, than what I tyold you.
I did protect it very well using Bed comforter, old carpet etc,for the first 2 winters.
