My Green Sal's Corleone Cuttings Arrived

Thanks JD!  All the way from Florida to the Southern California low desert in only 3 days!

Unfortunately our mail comes late, and it was pretty hot today, so when I removed them from their plastic and damp newspaper, they felt really warm.  I immediately stuck them in ice water, and then they got really perky.  I cut off about 1/4 to 1/2" so they could absorb water easily, and put them in water with a cello bag to keep moisture in until I can get them potted tomorrow morning!

There were a few leaves, but I either removed or cut them in half.  Some seem to have small root initial.  I'll keep them in the shade until I see roots inside their cello bags, then I'll give them one gallon pots.

Fingers crossed they all grow, but I'll be happy if only one does!

Thanks again JD!

Good luck with your green cuttings Suzi, if they fail I'll send you some in the fall.

Thanks Barry!  I will definitely give you a "heads up," if these don't make it!

This morning I tackled the job, and put 3 of the biggest into cello bags.  They all had visible root initials.  The bags got damp potting soil, and got put into a planter box with seran wrap over all to keep in moisture.  The ones with tips, and a couple ends that I had to cut off due to size are all in damp potting soil in one pot covered with a mini greenhouse.  2, one bud wonders (cut off) are on their sides outside in a one inch trench covered with 1/2 inch loose damp soil in partial shade.

I'll keep you posted.  I hope those cello bags show roots soon!  Nice to be able to see if the leaves are real or fake! :-)

I would not allow them any direct sun, it will get quite hot under the plastic.

I started a sucker and a small greenwood today and I agree with Brent by placing it away from direct sun and do not cover it. Place it in the shade.

They are all in the shade on the covered patio.  The 40 fresh cuttings from unknown figs that I started this way about 3 weeks ago are mostly doing fine with some showing multiple leaves.   They are still covered, but I do peek now and then.

Do you think the plastic is a bad idea?  It is hot here, and dry, and I didn't want them to dry out.

Suzi,

Sorry!
I completely forgot about the hot dry desert heat.
Maybe covering isn't a bad idea after all?

Now you got me thinking. LOL
