My Greenhouse Visit

After living here over 20 years i never knew this nursery existed a town over from me and its large one too. But that particular road is not a main street i suppose why i never saw nursery.
Remis mentioned this to me when he visit one time and reminded me about it on the last visit.
I saw a few fig plants outside and then asked some of the help about where there any others and they told me greenhouse 12 i think it was.
So i go thru main entrance to 12 and saw about 10 plants and looked at label there were 2 types Celestial which the leaves reminded somewhat of Celeste and everbearing label which leafs look similar to regular brown turkey.
Now Remis mentioned to me to try and talked to the owner an older gentleman he said but i saw nobody like that so i asked sokeone about plants and he stated Celestial is dark type and everbearing was light type and i asked about Jerusalem fig he said i think we have just the ones Ted the owner propagate them from but thats it he thinks.
So i asked to speak with Ted please and he said i will go look for him , so i start looking around in same area.
15 minutes later and im sweating like i died and went downstairs to a place that rymes with mell cause its 85 outside and very very humid and im in the greenhouses.
Here comes Ted in a battery cart zipping to me and we start talking about figs and those plants celestial and everbearing and he mentioned same color type as the helper did, so we kept talking and Ted i guess felt a little comfortable and said follow me and showed me the big everbearing tree growing inground since the 1950s that he propagates from it looks similar to Brunswick leaves i metion and he simply said its a white type everbearing.
I asked about Jeruslaem fig and he said i show you the trees i propagted from so i follow him along the way he stops and tell the help shred some peat and this and that, along the way he also is talking to me about figs. We go into the back another greenhouse but smaller with a closed door and some plants and right away i saw them about 5 plants similar to me height with beautiful leaves . So we chatted about it and he stated a greek man down the block gave him a plant and thats all he new about it. He did not know the fig color and i saw the figs which looked like normal looking unripe figs and now i think about it i never looked at the eye. He said these are not for sale, i asked if he had a small one and he said yes i have 1 only left and we went to it.
He got to talking about morepersonal matters he stated he is 80 (looks very good) and the passing of his wife last year . He stated he is basically the PR man now at the nursery as he cannot walk around much after 7 knee surgery's and a hip replacement. Also each morning he looks forward to coming to nursery and working with his plants.
He said come here i show you my rarest plant and he mentioned a scientific name which i did not recognize. To me it looks like a palm tree about oh say 8 feet tall but the long palm leafs are variegated and he said there are many with 3 stripes of variegation in but this one has 5 of them. I politely asked how he obtain this plant and he said huttington nursery in La there were some folks there trading and selling seeds and he bought 300 seeds and this one was only 1 that turmed like this and he mentioned Mutated.
Ok so now we start talking about mutation and i mention i have 1 fig plant that was reported to have done this its variegated fig plant and i said the limb holding the variegation is also variegated but if i dont watch plant some new leaves come out green and dont go back and he said yes it is reverting and to keep cutting those off which i have done as of late and propagated some real pretty ones to further study along with an all green one as well i told him. He smiled. He said some plants in the world mutate every so often and some plants names cryhsthemum, pointsetta i think and a few others  he mentioned are helped along by certain people that take a cutting without roots and xray them with machine and once in a great while they mutate when propagated afterwards.
We went to counter and i payed 9.27 for plant i show pictures of.
All i know is a greek guy brought to him and called it Jerusalem.
One day next season i will do the same thing and bring Ted some fig plants that he does not have i said to him .
Shook hands and thanked him for his time he spent with me.
Here are pictures and maybe next season Remis and i can compare and learn about this plants habits.
Thanks Remis for telling me about nursery it was a extremly pleasent experience talking with Ted.

Thanks Sal
Time might tell what this is , those leaves like you said do not match.
Im thinking for the greek man to call it Jeruslaem it may be from that area who knows but himself.
On Teds larger plants of this type not for sale i was surprised that the leaves held the nice shape more so than any other leaf shape on tree i observed.
But the tree was not too old as the main was not real big of a diameter either.
My best guess would be 2 seasons old at the most from the look of its main trunk.
I had such a great time there .

Nice looking fig Martin,

You might have something no one else has.
Keep us posted.

Great find Martin.  My co-worker came to me.  He said, " Dennis someone told me you were a fig man, is that true?"  I siad, "yes".  He said, "great, my neighbours are Greek, they are up in age and love figs."  "Every year they try to give me their fig cuttings.....I don't know what to do with them, do you want them?"  I fell out of my chair saying, HECK YEAH!  He siad, "I hate to keep telling my neighbours no.....I'll bring you the cutting when they give them to me......their yard is full of fig trees!"

Martin, Sal, when I get those cuttings, I'll send you some.  I've asked my coworker to get the name, skin color, and interior color, he said he would.  I can't wait to get those cuttings!

Nice score, Dennis.

Oops!  I forgot about you Jon.  I'll send you some too.

Hi Dennis.
Thanks for kind offer
but storage now is to tight, i do have room for some more and what types i have intereset in now i have to watch the available space thats left in garage if they become available.
I will be getting rid of some plants in up and coming seasons that are not too my standards or i simply cannot keep trying different types.

Martin it`s nice you had chance to talk with Ted  at least we now know something about that fig hope next year I`ll taste of that fig. It is about 5`feet tall and still growing.
Did mother plant had any fruit at Ted`s ?
I been going to Ted`s for last 7 years, they have great collection of cactus and Succulents.
Glad you enjoyed there !

Martin, that's a great story.  I wonder how many other people are out there like Ted?

He had some figs on plant which surprised him when he saw them and said oh they have figs i see its been a while since i was back here. I guess the help has been taken car of things back there cause everything look healthy.

Oh yes i was looking at those cactus plants while i was waiting for him , he had so many types . My grandmother had several above her sink on window sill and he had a few of those that i came very close to buying for 3.00 each.

I may go back there sometime mid to late September to ask or see if those figs are dark or light type and if i have any extra little fig plants i bring to him.
Im still thinking about that red papaya tree so beautiful that tree is just not use to seeing those things here.
Thanks to you for mentioning this place like i said been here over 20 years and its 12 minutes away but never had reason to go down that street.

Oh yes i had a trumpet vine if thats what your is in picture and drove me nuts as it spread by sending rhysones under ground and sprouting up in places i did not want it by hostas and in front and in back and on top of my shed. It flower are nice but they attracted lots of bee's so over several years i kept digging  and pulling them out and spraying killer on them. I tell you them roots from this plant goes to china its was so hard to get rid of , there may me 1 or 2 little ones around.

Dennis,
Ask your co-worker if he thought it would be OK if you came over sometime this month (figs should be ripening!) to meet his neighbor. I'm sure the neighbor would be delighted to talk to another fig-lover. That way you can probably get pictures of the mother tree, fruits and leaves and maybe even find out the name.
