My happy craigslist find

So on Monday I did a search for 'figs' in my local craigslist and found an ad from a guy selling figs by the pound. I have lots of fig trees but no figs. I want figs. So I emailed him! He only had 3 lbs worth of figs left so I took everything he would part with.

All are brebas -

From the top - clockwise
*?Celeste? - He called it Celeste. Looks kinda like Kiwibob's Brunswick? Sort of. It's bigger than the rest.
*Desert King
*Violetta
*He called it his 'green fig' but it looks and tastes just like Lattarula.

I gave the girls a somewhat unripe lattarula. They didn't mind. They drooled while I made them wait.

I am definitely going to visit this guy again next Summer in early August. He claims to have the most fig trees in Seattle and he may be right. I think he has Kiwibob beat. And they're huge and healthy looking. I'm bummed it was so dark when I visited but he showed me the trees from his deck - too dark for photos - but he has maaaaany! I asked if he knew about this forum. He knows but I get the impression he isn't one for online forums. He has the love of figs though and the love for sharing. I like fig people.

Sorry Pyxistort - I snagged the last of them :)

Very possibly that the 'green fig' is the [PNW commonly grown] 'Gillette' fig.
Even the [cute] dogs love it...

That is true. To me the Gillette and lattarula tasted similar

Oh and the guy got major brownie points for guessing me to be in my 20s. Ignoring the fact that it was dark out... I went with it ;)

Nichole,
You are one step ahead of me.  LOL
I hope those are good figs. Does he have more than those four varieties?

They are good. The desert king and lat/gill are the better ones imo

He had 9 varieties total with 35 trees in ground total. Something like that.

>>> All are brebas -

All; take note, this is September....

Due to the PNW cool-weather, fig breba (1st fruit on last year wood) ripens late.

The (2nd) main-crop (fruit on new wood) never ripens.

One reason why the 'San Pedro' fig types are preferred in the PNW?

[Something I leaned from visiting Kiwibob].

Woohoo!!!  Good for you Nichole!!

Ah,  men - they sure know the way to a womans heart -----through her ears!! ;)

Men take note, ALWAYS  assume a woman 10 years younger than you think, you could never go wrong lol.

Nichole - I just love your dogs!  They are just too darn cute for words!

The figs....look...OK...the doggies....melt my heart!  Two beautiful animals!  In another life I'd have a lot of property, and a pack of dogs playing together.

Rub their ears for me.

Frank

What a neat story!  Happy you got your fill of figs for a while!  Nice you met a fig lover close by!  Your doggies are so cute!

JoAnn is right about ladies loving when men get their age mistaken by 10 years or so!  LOL!  I got carded the other day at the grocery store.  Ha!  I looked the child in the eye, and said, "Are you kidding?"  "How about I show you pictures of my grandkids?"  He insisted, and I told him he made my day!  Came home grinning and gloating to JD!

Arden Moore is a speaker and the author of this book:  Real Food for Dogs  I found out about her because she is giving a local seminar about growing your own food for dogs and I guess she has lots of recipes in the book.  We don't have dogs but I knew you would want to go to that seminar!  Too far from you.  Her website is here.

Congrats on your fig find!
Suzi

Frank - done and done. I had yesterday off and we shared a fig or 10 ;)

Suzi - I am all about those home cooked meals for the pups. I feed them raw and bake their cookies. They don't do well on commercial diets. Too many allergies and sensitivities.

Something about pictures look almost like paintings.  Love them and your dogs.  Weren't you the one that never tasted figs before getting trees?  Glad you found some fresh ones.

Yeah I'm the crazy one who got a bunch of trees without ever eating a fresh one. I've had a good sampling now :)

Nichole, I'm hoping since you've planned on returning to his place again that you would still have some contact information that maybe you could pass on to me?  I live in the PNW and I would love to talk with someone who has much experience with figs in this area and figs in the ground out here.  I'm in need of a figgy mentor!
:)

He was a real treat to talk to. Loved his figs and loved talking about them. I have two contacts to give you. Will PM you shortly!

Nicole,

Take the tail-waggers along next time. You might get more figs.

They might get more figs. Not sure I would. They love fruit.

Well, I guess maybe there needs to be an exception to that advice.  If you think she looks about 19 or 20, she probably wouldn't like it if you say she's 9 or 10.

:-)    (LOL)

Mike

Cute puppies!  And 10 years younger works for the guys too.  I remember two younger lady friends at work telling me I looked 37 when I was in my mid-40's.  Well, whether they were teasing or serious I went with it and it made my day. By the way, I'm still at 37.  That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

What a great find! Congratulations
