My inground figs pictures.

I only have four figs planted. Hopefully by the end of the summer I will have tripled that number.

L-R Lemon - Italian strawberry - Brown Turkey - BT fruit - LSU Purple

Sorry for the poor pictures I had to e-mail them to myself to make them smaller and I still can't figure out how to put a picture in the post instead of a thumb.

Hi Charles,
How far apart are they planted?  Have the produced fruit before? They look beautiful!

Looking good!

They are looking healthy. Nice to see the pictures.

I placed them on fifteen foot centers and will eventually have a second row (hopefully later this summer if I don't kill all my cuttings) behind this one which will be stagger planted and the rows will be 12 foot apart.

I had one fig on the Brown turkey last year but it was eaten by something. I had some on the LSU Purple early this year but again they disappeared.

You are most kind. They are a bit scraggly (especially the LSU Purple) and without direction right now. I'm a bit terrified to start cutting on them.

LOL!!!
I used to grow bonsai trees years ago - talk about fear of cutting!!  Not only the tops but the roots too!  For years and years (and even today) you hear about the delicate roots!  Be careful not to damage them!!

Then in bonsai WHACK EM !!  THAT'S ONLY 1/4 OF THE ROOT SYSTEM - CUT MORE MORE MORE!!!

OK, maybe I exaggerated a little bit - very little.  I belonged to a club on LI and they would have a workshop/demo at least 8 times a year.  One night in particular a bonsai guru came in and worked on an 8ft cypress that weighed close to 200lb (or more)  it took 3 men to lift the thing onto the work table.  He proceeded to take the root ball from about 3ft in diameter to fit into a bonsai pot about 16" x16", chopped the tree down to 42" and  wired it.  I actually won it in the raffle at the end of the night - I estimated it weighed about 50lb - I could lift it.  It did not make it through it's first year - no wonder when he whacked off about 90% of the roots!!  75% would have bee OK and put in a regular pot for the first year for recovering purposes.  I didn't realize it at the time, but if I had put it in a larger pot when I got home it might have survived.

Anyway, I doubt that would happen to your sweet babies - they are beautiful - their figs!!

Your right. Thank God I don't have to cut the roots.
