Wow. Beautiful trees. Thank you for sharing, gives me idea what to plant next. Are your fruit trees tasty? 

More importantly, can you discuss how you winter protect?

Jennifer the only one fig I have not tasted yet is Colasanti #3 but the others are very good and do real well in my climate.

As for protection I wrap them with Burlap first then put a paper bag over it by cutting a cross on the bottom and fill it with dry leaves then wrap them up with burlap.

So two burlap layers?

No just one burlap layer. Once I have the layer of burlap done I slip a paper yard bag over the top and fill it with dry leaves and then wrap everything with a Tarp. Worked really well last winter didn't have any damage on any of them but it was a mild winter for canadian standards.

Nelson - Nice!  Are the pictures today?

I have a similar sized colasanti white (p 2009) in a pot.  The fruit is silver dollar or more sized now, it is very early.  Last year I did not get any ripe until October, now if I follow the Herman2 scale, I am hoping to have them by August 15.  I guess there is a difference in ground versus the pot.

When did you plan them?  In the fall or the spring?

Hi John the ones with the concrete barricade were all planted when I moved in last august. Paradiso Nero & Colasanti #3 were 3 months old at the time and both made it just fine. BT-MD was already 2 years old at the time and was prunned back before covering. I also had a celeste inground that I dug up and put in a pot and planted G+A there instead.

The colasanti White & Dark were planted this year I planted the Colasanti Dark ingroun Mid March was still dormant at the time and the colasanti white planted it inground sometime in May.

I did notice my dad's plants in pots of the same varieties mentioned above are all atleast 3 weeks ahead of my inground trees. My Inground trees just started forming figs about a week ago my dads in pots started forming early june.

i too got inspired and planted 5 varieties inground after you, grant and other zone 5 members reported good result in early spring
i am hopeful they will survive the next winter with protection

i want to plant another couple of young airlayers that are just about ready to be removed from the mother tree. do you think it is too late to put in ground this season? will i have sufficient time for the roots to establish before winter?

Very healthy and beautiful fig trees. Nelson do you fertilize them and what you use and when?

are you using any fertilizers or lime?

Eli, I dont think I would plant new airlayer's now as we only really have 3 months left of good weather but if you do make sure you protect the root area very well with lots of mulch.

I ferlized them with 10-10-10 slow release and Dolomitic Lime mid May and in Mid June I fertilized them again with liquid 10-15-10 as an experiment so far so good I do water them well every other day exept for this last week they have been watered everyday due to this crazy heat.

Paradiso Nero suffered the most from late frost and took a while to bounce back but doing well now and has about a dozen small figs. After the frosts it got deformed leaves and what looked like rust.

I just planted my Colisanti Dark in May, but I took an airlayer of it and pinched all the branches with figs so hes a little sparse right now just starting to push new growth but he wants to produce a lot of figs.  I am curious to compare later how they are.  My colisanti white it loaded with figs and a lot of them are larger than a golf ball, I had some that were huge last year but I think these will be even bigger and he too loves to put on a lot of figs it seems.  I will have to post pictures later on.

Chivas, the colasanti white & Dark are very good producer's the third fig I got from them is stubborn as a mule. I had moma tree for 2 full season's and never formed a fig I only keep it because of how they described it long green with red pulp very hardy though probably the hardiest of the 3 of them and I like the leaves lol.

Your trees look great! I successfully over wintered 2 trees this past winter but like you said it was a mild one. I planted 4 more inground this Spring and hope that this winter will be kind to them. I was thinking to get a jump start in Spring I might lay black plastic around the trees to warm the ground and then when it's warm enough I'll remove it. I don't if it will work but we'll see next year.

Very nice trees, Nelson. My concern is their proximity. You will likely have to prune most of the breba wood away to maintain their size to something manageable and I know you have a short growing season. Best of luck though!

Hey Ruben I will more than likely keep only 2-3 nodes of new growthsand focus more on main crop for the 3 closer to the house the other two are about 8ft apart so will let them grow wild for a while.

Tony I like your idea about the black plastic I think if the roots warm up quicker we might get fruit forming earlier think i will try that next year.

Thank you guys, this is nothing one day when I get a chance I will take pictures of some big fig trees growing inground that I have seen near me.

I also have an English bt that will not be protected just to see how much cold it can handle.

Nelson - you are where i'd like to get to with the plants inground.  Certainly last year was a mild winter.  

I, to, have the colisanti white with golfball sized fruit right now.  I pinched last summer without needing to trim for the most part, and the new wood exploded from the end buds this spring.  However, there was one branch I had to trim this early spring and it is about three weeks behind, with the branches coming from the prior nodes only woken up this year.
