Hi Martin,

Which one is the one from Scott?

and which one do you think is a fake?

Nice pictures BTW

Thanks

Hi Cecil!
The last 2 pictures are the not madeira (fake)
If you can with your mouse put it over the picture and some text will show, you can also click the picture to enlarge it.
Scotts madeira i have been cutting the leafs off to give it more growth upwards and it has responded well and the growth seems to have picked up with the warmer weather, the weekly solution of miracle grow and superthrive solution mixed in, the plant also is in miracle grow potting soil with that slow realease fertilizer also so its getting over fertilized and thats the intention. The plant seems to be getting the better of the FMV these cultivars have as it grows although still there its doing much better with it.
I wanted to let it grow to 4 feet and nip but will nip it at about 32 inches to put out some side shoots then i slow down the fertilizing as season gets older to harden it off some before it gets late in season, the scion i recieved from Jon started but failed so im being real careful with this plant. I just noticed this morning a tiny fig growing but i think i will knock it off as im concentrating on the tree growing limbs and gaining strength only for this season not figs.
As for the other plant well i was going to burn it in the can but i pass by this one house in neighborhood and notice 2 fig plants outside there porch first time i seen any fig plants in area , i did stop by there last year to talk but daughter answered and just said they are greek descent and her moms friend gave her the ones i seen, so maybe i will give them a surprise and leave it on the porch.

It will be interesting to see what the fakes turn out to be!

Martin, I checked my Madeira from Encanto and the leaves look  similar to the one you got from Scott.

Ciao Martin,  Wow,  what a difference between them!!!  YOu certainly have something different the last two pictures.  Thats ashame not getting what you want or payed for!!!   If my nonna was still around, I would have her put the zingara on that person!!!!  Maybe I should brush up!!!  Ciao.

You go girl!!!

Should look like this:

Jon thanks i have been looking at that same leaf of yours since last year with heartburn!
Yes mine is same , also i have yet to get a 5 lobe on this young plant unlike the other plant which has them soon as the bud opens.
Yes this one is real thing  thanks for posting picture as your Encanto website with its information and pictures is by far the best one out there period.

SCOTT, i know we have talked but again many thanks for the consideration you gave me when i first asked you about your UcDavis plants that you propagated and posted last season.

Very nice Martin. The leaves look just like the ones on mine. If UC Davis didn't mislabel that cutting, then we're golden. Pinched mine at 44 inches. You have done well to get that one that large so quickly in your zone as mine was the largest of the bunch initially. All the ones you sent me are growing well. Thanks to Jon from both of us for his idea on over fertilization to help shake off the effects of mosaic.

Hi Martin,

Nice looking plants.  Do you pinch all of your trees at this time to induce branching or is this specifically for the Madeira?

Brad

Last winter I located 3 varieties of fig trees brought over in the 50's from the Madeira Islands. I believe one of them is the Black Madeira. At least its leaves look like the ones in this thread. The owner called it Fico Prato and described it as a round black fig.

Is the Black Madeira a main crop fig only? I ask because this tree was just starting fruit production at the end of May whereas the other two trees had mature fruit that were nearly ripe.

The first attached image shows the fruit from the two trees with nearly mature fruit. The second is the leaf from the Fico Prato (Black Madeira?)

Brad, i eventually pinch main trunk tip when it reaches a height that i like. All fig plants i have i eventually clip off the top of main trunk.

Sue, the fico prato does look close, will be interesting one season to compare fruit if i can get mine to ripen in my climate i will give my best shot.
I could not tell you if madeira has breba and main , this morning i did knock off a fig that i waited to make sure it was a fig , it was on the top with new growth but the tree is only 1 season old maybe next season if things go well
(fingers crossed) i will have a little better gauge of what its doing.
Sure hope it makes it out of dormancy in garage next growing season 2010 as i had 1 that did not similar size, that was main reason i ordered some scion from Jon (wanted make extra plant in case) but they started and went caput .

Sue, any chance you know what variant is your green fig & how's the productivity, flavour & taste  ? It is a big fig.

Paully22,

The green Madeira fig is HUGE! I've never seen a fig that big. As mentioned I just found the dormant tree last Jan in a lady's backyard. I'll go back probably late July or August to get more pictures and taste the fruit. She said it was very sweet. I was thinking it might be the Lampiera (Fico Porthoguese) but I have no pictures of its fruit to compare. I did contact the person who donated the Lampiera scion to UCD. He said he'd take pics of his fruit and send them to me for comparison. Until then, it's the Long Necked Green Madeira Fig or as Estela called it, Fico Bebrevas (sp?).

I'll post more when I can on all 3 figs.

Martin,
I have 2 BM's from UCD that are also a year old. It is a slow growing tree for sure! Good luck with yours next winter.

Sue

Very good detective work, Sue. Fico prato by the leaves. Prato means plate? or a fig from Prato, Italy. Who knows?

Scott

I joined a forum for the Madeira Islands and posted the question regarding the 3 madeira fig tree's names there. The gentleman who answered says his parents and grandparent had lots of fig trees.

He said the fig I called Figo Prato (black madeira?) is more than likely really called Figo Pardo on the Islands (...Figo pardo - not prato ( prato in portuguese means plate ) pardo means coloured...).

The green fig he said is called figo lampo (lampirea?)

No word as to the name of the long black fig yet...

Sue

Hey Martin,

Unless you are cramped for room why not give your "fake" fig plant some more time, maybe it is worth saving? and then you would know !

Ha ha, I just thought of something it might turn out to be a Mulberry.

I believe that "figo lampo" is the generic term for "breba" in Portuguese.

Check out this link http://www.flickr.com/photos/valter/1239142930/ to see a photo (not mine) of what somebody calls the breba of the Lampa Preta variety from the Algarve region in Portugal.

Not trying to be dramatic here it just made me more aggravated as time pass so it was best for me to release that feeling this way. Im not going to comment anymore about this plant.

Martin,

I know you said you wasn't going to comment on this no more and that's good.

Look at the bright side, A straight shooting NICE member helped you get the Real McCoy!

Hmm, good pic on the Lampa Prieta. I think i have this one, it was given to me as Lampas Prietas, sounds the same to me!

Ok let me try and help you guys a bit I was born in madeira and know that Figo pardo translates to coloured fig wich is the black madeira. Figos lampos litteraly means breba crop . My great grandfather has a huge 50+ year old fig tree he always called it an abebra tree these  looked exactly like the ones on the picture above they are very large green figs pear shaped not to be confused with the abebereira wich are big black figs . Im hopping to get some cuttings from my great grandfathers tree this september when my uncle goes there. The problem is people give them different names all over the Island so to get a correct name could be a bit of work.

Boy do we know about the confusion regarding fig naming!

Thanks for your help. I was pretty sure the one fig was the Black Madeira but not sure of the other two. I will get to taste the 3 figs in the next month or two and will let everyone know if they are worthy of propagating. :-)

Sue

Sue,

I have the lampeira from Adrianos and I have had the fruit.  Its a small dark red fig which tasted very good last october when I had it at Adriano's.  Leaf structure is not at all the same.
