My Mission Fig Tree

Here is a newer plant i have. I was picking up some upm potting soil at a nursery for my small plants and saw hardy chicago and mission plants. Most all there mission plants had figs this 1 did not and since my cuttings failed for various reasons i decided why not . So i picked out plant i liked best. I did have a nice chat with the fella and he mentioned its Monrovia Mission fig these arrived from Visalia California recently which also was mentioned on tag as well. Hope to sample some figs next season.

Martin,

In New Jersey, I was growing a Mission that originated from Monrovia.  It was so good, it restored my faith in the variety.

That's a good looking tree, Martin. Nice find.

Its always nice to add a mission to the collection.  I have 4 strains, 2 with bad fmv, 1 with a slight case and a 4th that appears to be fmv free.  If black mission dosen't ripen to perfection this year, then it probably never will.  At least in my neck of the woods.

Here is picture of a fig on my monrovia mission plant i bought this season.
It may or not ripen before season ends here, there are a couple i left on tree.

I only have about half a dozen figs left on my Mission from Monrovia ate about a dozen figs myself and my parents have been eating them too one of my favorite figs to eat.

How lucky you are to live somewhere that you can find great figs randomly at nurserys.  There is only one nursery here that ever carries them.  I should be thankful for that one I guess.

I started my Mission here in CT from a UCD cutting in late Spring
2008. It had 2 figs its first year in 2009 while still quite small.  This year
it had 18 figs. Very, very good. They just started ripening last
week or so. Still have about 5 to go. I could have picked 3 today
but decided to wait another day.

My first delightful taste of Mission figs was during a visit to friends in Santa Rosa and a side trip to the Mission in Sonoma that is now a Historical Site. In the court yard was a huge fig tree. The ground was covered with figs. Most were too high on the tree to reach but my friend and I picked as many as we could and retrieved dozens from the ground. What a feast we had!

Although there is no mention of figs there is an interesting account of
the history of this Northern most Mission originally started by a Spanish
Priest and destroyed many times. If anyone would like to read
it.  Mission San Francisco Solano (Sonoma)
