My New Baby

I was checking my cuttings and I couldn't believe my eyes "A Baby Fig"  I got these cuttings from Herman and they are unbelievable I received the cuttings on a Friday no sign of buds at all and by Sunday the actual leaves popped out and now after a week I am getting figs

Herman what are you feeding your trees?

You have to remove it : ( The chances of it ever ripening are zero, but if it stays on it will probably kill the cutting, or at least stunt its growth badly by sapping its strength. The cutting is your baby, take care of it and snap that little fig's neck so more leaves can grow.

I have always like seeing the precision pinched tips on H2's cuttings and plants. He is like a fig surgeon!

Looks great.  What is it?  And I'm sure everyone would say the same.  No roots, no figs.

HEY!! look at the one on the bottom row, second from the left. You have air roots! wet some more perlite and mound it up over the top of that cup and they will grow gown into the rest of the cup, quick, before they dry out.

Brent you have eyes as a hawk  actually there were quite a few that had air roots I did put some more rooting mix to save them it broke my heart but I did pluck that fig off ...............

I have gotten as good at spotting roots as I am at fossils and mushies!

You did the right thing, it has to be done and will get easier. The best advice is to knock them all of the first year, and then only leave a few next year. It can takes a long time to get a mature tree, but even longer if it is stressed out trying to fruit.

It's really hard to practice "tough love" but well worth it.  We have to do the same thing with baby grape clusters on 1-3 year old vines.    It's very painful to pinch them off, but watching healthy foliage is very rewarding!  At least figs give you fruit much faster than citrus or grapes, so you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor soon!

Hello i am new here nice to join this wonderful forum...hope i will learn lot of knowledge from all of you guys. Thanks
