My new best friend

Ciao friends,  I have tried a few different methods of propogation. My favorite is to always stick the stick in loose soil and spray occasionally and stick roots into beautiful tree with no troubles. I never liked the bag method unless I used newspaper, but it becomes too used to moisture and doesn't accilmilate to drier environment quickly and the stick shocks. I never went into too much burdens with so many methods, I did want to find a few years back, maybe a method that works better than the OLD methods, but I have come to this conclusion that them OLD methods are still good! Rain water is sooo wonderful. I had used rain water before, but I was very impatient then, and worried the small white mush bumps that come was all that would happen and It would never grow good roots, I was wrong. I have almost 87 cuttings this fall but first cleaned and simply filled small plastic containers with good pure rainwater, and let them sit in warm 80 degrees environment, first the mushy white root looking things come and then the good strong roots, very quickly, especially near the strong heat (the ones closest to the hot radiator heat). I never ever cover them, just mist them lightly every day. Every last one rooted beautifully and starting to go to small pots for myself and customers reserved for the spring! Also, I personally think that Not complete dormant cuttings work the very very best! The real dormant cuttings in past never rooted as quickly or as well, so I wonder about the dormant thing. For me, in fall, even before leaves have come off, take these cuttings and root them, they absolutely root for me much better. I also, have made great rooting success with green cuttings in summertime, they grow beautifully!!  One thing I like to do is to take all the MARKED cups, one at a time to rinse then refresh the rainwater, maybe 2 times week, this allows good oxygen in the water. Keep the varieties marked well and maybe separate them well too. If you want to check your sticks, lift the cup and all to view each variety because you may forget which cup you lifted the stick out of and then you have a big variety mixup and have to discard the stick!!!!!! Sorry haven't been a part of forums lately, very very busy with CHRISTMAS cooking. Ciao amici!

Ciao Maggie,
nice to read what works for members .
What works well for "me" is similar, not fully dormant sticks they seem to root faster.
I like to use the zip lock food container as posted in another thread put in warm place (laundry room) which also works well for me.
Rainwater i use also as i have gallon jugs stored with it.

Maggie you only doing less than a 100 sticks thats it .... LOL

On another note you doing all that cooking well you know what they say as we age we tend to put on some pounds each year especially during Holiday season that many people do not lose all of it maybe a little .
You may be on your way slowly to be a chubby and shrinking Italian ole lady one day like many of our parents were.  ; )
Dieseler<~~~ weight gaining baldheaded shrinking ageing Italian that eats too many figs .

Ciao Martin, You make me laugh, yes, I thought of that the other day, I am starting to be more like my nonna more and more as the years go by. I hope to shrink, I am so tall now! 5foot 9 inches, heavier not getting heavier at all thank goodness! But this will probably change. My husband has gained weight though, I don't mind, Eat Eat Eat, why deprive yourself?, especially on holiday. My grandma though, she was only 5 feet and spread out! The other grandma was tall like me and stick skinny, but she still ate so much.  Good memories! I think of those old girls when I make all this food they taught me to make with no recipe! Ciao

I'm trying the 'put the stick in a pot and leave outside till spring' method right now.  I also tried shoving one in the Georgia clay just to see how it fares (at least it won't shrivel up in clay, eh?)

Will be interesting to see how it all turns out!
