My new figs and first frost and rooting update

Hi all,
I've been very busy with my super active son that my mind's been away from 'fig' in past few months. And unfortunately we experienced sudden change of weather and got our first frost on Saterday night. I woke up and saw frost on my car and my heart sank - my figs (my big figs) are still outside!! (all the small fig trees are already inside)

Fortunately the day got warmer and the figs (3) didnt seems to have any damage so I decided let it sit outside for a little longer.

But last night while reading at 10PM I heard that it'd be in the low 30s - I got out of bed and lifted all my figs and other tropical plants inside. Now all are protected!!

It's been a long while and my rootings (that I got from Pete) have many roots and leaves. They didnt grow much becasue I have them inside... here are some pictures

When is it a good time to re-pot them? I'm afraid to do it during the cold month but I dont know if I should keep it like this.

I actually want to take these bunch to Thailand so my mom can plant them. I'm going there in two week. Do you think it'll last a 30hrs plus in a dark suitcase? or Thailand heat?

Anya

They will be fine in a suit case. I would NOT repot them before transporting them. Repotting is usually a bit of a stress on a plant, so best to leave them as is, transport them, acclimate them, and then consider repotting.

Do you think 2 weeks are enough to acclimate them?

There is a fig tree in my neighborhood (I got hook on fig coz of that tree) and am thinking about going there a day before my departure and get some cutting too :) I hope at least one or two survive!

Hello Nepen. I know this is an older thread but may we please ask you a question? Do we only need a solo cup size to root the fig cuttings? I thought at least a 1 gallon size pot or sticking the cuttings into the ground like rose cuttings? I am amazed at how small the cup is you had used to root your cuttings. :)

Hi AuntieB,
I am not an expert in rooting and this is my first time :) Anyway, Pete (bullet) gave me the cuttings and a small unknown in a cup. I repotted the unknown and re-used the cup for my cuttings. I dont think you need to have too big of a cup to root your cutting. I think it's better to use one cut each cutting because if you have multiple, it can be difficult when re-potting and i heARD that's when the problem occur. I hope this help you some :) this is just my own opinion.

I dont know about just sticking the root to the ground becasue it like to be in a pretty humid place and in the ground it's hard to move around. People recommend just put it in a dark humid place.

Please refer to my other topic 'rooting fail' - there are many good suggestions about rooting in that one!!

Hi AnutieB -

I wrote you a very long reply but I accidently deleted it!!
Anyway, I dont think the size of the cup mattered but a clear cup is good so you can see if there was any root. Also I think one cup per cutting should be better when re-potting since everyone told me that's when the problem occur.

I dont know about just sticking the cutting on to the ground - sorry.

Please refer to my other old topic 'Rooting fail' - there are many good tips and suggestions from all the friendly people here.

Hi Nepen. It's so sweet of you to bring the trees to your Mom. I hope you have a wonderful vacation! And thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my question and sending me the other thread. :)
