Hi everybody, I live in city of Philadelphia (zone 6B?) and planted two Brown Turkey fig trees last March.
When I checked several days ago, these small trees have black spots on leaves.
Do I need to spray dormant oil or something to get rid of fungus on leaves?
I also have question about winter protection of these fig trees.
Is it necessary for me to cover these trees with tar paper to protect from severe cold winter?
Some people say it is ok to wrap with burlap and cover with large trash can to keep dry during winter but some people say we should never use plastic.
When I checked tar paper in garden center, they are selling large roll for $19.90.
I don't feel like carrying heavy great big roll of tar paper knowing I am not fixing roof but only need less than 1/10 of tar paper.
What else can I use other than tar paper to keep fig trees dry during winter?
One more question. I am thinking to cover these trees with dried leaves first and wrap with burlap before finish covering with something to keep these trees nice and dry.
Is this good idea or not?
When I stop and think, last year I did not do anything to protect these fig trees from severe winter but survived and had some fruits.
