My SC figs

My figs.jpg
Green Greek, Hollier, Brooklyn White, Yugo Black, Osborn Prolific, Green Ischia, Golden Celeste,
Blue Ischia, Gillette W Wamsley, Black Mission, Celeste, Black Jack, Gillette Croisic, Hardy Chicago,
Improved Celeste, Mead, Hardy Chicago, Alma, Lemon, Brown turkey, Vdb, Rdb, JH Adriatic, LSU Scotts Yellow, Cucumber, Italian 88, Strawberry Verte (friends family heirloom from LA), Aubiqua Petite, Red Libya, Vista, Easton Vasilika, Bigger Lizette, GM-8 and a few I'm forgetting.

The first 2 rows are full of figs even tho everything was killed back to ground level.

Cow manure composted and 10-10-10 was used at the beginning of spring.
I just mulched around all figs with pine bark.

So to those of you who I traded, purchased or just gave away...Thank you.

Behind my figs is one of my 3 small gardens.

Happy gardening.
Doug

SC Figs, I was thinking you meant Sal's Corleone fig but it isn't in your list.

Nice looking fig orchard though!  What spacing for the fig trees?

SC, South Carolina
Hey that is one I forgot.
Sal's Corleone. Its in there!

I spaced the figs at 8 feet between figs.
Plus or minus, I make sure there is good drainage vs exact spacing.
All the land was covered by brush and trees when I bought it. So I had to work with what I got.
I believe I set it at 15 feet between rows. There is one row not showing....

You are lucky you don't have a hillside covered with boulders blocking your rows.  I find boulders to be fig friendly.  I plant mine next to a boulder (if there is actually ground there).  They all go in gopher cages.  Somehow the figs find a way to get their roots under the boulder where it is damp, and I almost don't have to water.  It's all good.  Harvesting figs is another issue.  I have a hiking staff to get me down the steepness.  I put those leftover snap together plastic thingies you buy berries and cherry tomatoes in over figs starting to ripen.  Birds can't mess with that, nor can possums or coons.

Good luck with your real orchard!  To me SC means USC!  Go Trojans!

Suzi

Thanks Suzi.

Good luck with yours too!

You must be full with figs! You will eat well this summer.

Looks great. And you still have room to grow right?

Sure thing Brent.

I need to work on that for my zone.

Doug

That looks great Doug, I'm envious of all your space. I glad to hear that some south La. trees are doing well in SC.
