My trip to Cajun country

Good day, well my trip to Cajun country was a total success!  I got the opportunity to meet Dalton of Durio Nursery and Mr James Robin.  They live close to each other.  Dalton had quite a few fig trees for sale.  However, those he had I also had.  Dalton was very nice.  We talked about Hollier, but first due to his accent, I did not know what he was saying.  His cajun slang was coming out.  He pronouced Hollier, "O-Yea" and for the life of me....I did not know what he was saying.  He finally added the "H" and then I knew it was Hollier.  After a bought several trees, he gave me a Hollier for free!  Here is a picture of Dalton.  If you want to order trees from him, first go his web site and click on the Availablity button and scroll down to figs and see what's available.  He said he was a little behind on updating the web page but it should be update soon.

As soon as I left Durio's I drove over to JR's.  He came out and we drove out to his hoop house.  He has a lot of land and planted a few fig trees in the ground for a "pick your own" orchard.  I like the spacious hoop house and wish I had one.  He had my fig order ready for pick up but I only had room in my car for one.  So, I bought a Hollier.  And he prounanced Hollier the same as Dalton.  By then, I knew O-Yea was Hollier and just laughed as I placed my trees in the car.  We talked about the military and all the good things God has given us on this earth.  He told me to tell Navid hello and to thank everyone for buying his trees.  He really appreciate all the support.  JR is a funny man and loves to talk.  He made my wife laugh by telling her to forgive me for loving figs more than her.  For this Fall's shipment, call and preorder your trees now from him.  Even though I already has the trees he have, I ordered more.   I think we should continue to support people like JR and Dalton and Bill of Bill's Figs.  I have not made it to visit Bill, maybe next year.  And for the record, LSU Brandy is the same as LSU Scott's Yellow, per Dalton.  I have 2 of them and need to go change my tags.

For those planning on visiting Dalton and JR in the future, don't do what I did.  I used Google Maps and it had me exiting off of I-10 taking highways.  The major highway out of Opelousas is under constuction.  You have to take I-49 to Baton Rouge which is what I should have taken in the first place!!!!  Argh!!! Oh well, you live and learn!  Also, Google Maps has Durio Nursery North on Hwy 182, actually it's South!!!!  I had to call Dalton for directions and told me about Google maps.  Overall, I had a wonderful time and plan on going back real soon!

Hi Dennis
nice of you to share some of your experience .
Dalton looks to be a happy man .

Arrrgghhhh, you already made your trip?  I thought you were passing through this coming weekend.  :\

Sorry I missed you.  I had an Owensboro Unk set aside for you.  If you pass through again, it should still be waiting here for you, or I'll send cuttings in the fall.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your trip. I wish that Ed Romero would not have been out of town. You and your wife would have enjoyed seeing his place too.

Hey Dan and Jason, I may drive back down next month.  I was planning another trip there on the 23rd but I have to attend my son's white coat ceremony for medical school.  I think that takes presidence over a fig trip.  Well, maybe in October....we will see.  You guys should have seen the faces on all those hotel people as I paraded my fig trees up to my room.  My wife wanted to leave them in the car, but I knew it would have been too hot in there.  I came home and repotted them to 5 gallon pots.

You ARE a fignut if you take your figs into your hotel room........

Yeah, I know.  People were looking and my wife said...."walk faster and hurry and push the elevator button! "

I also have a a pair of pruning shears and large white bowl in the back of my PU!  They came in handy 2 days ago when I found another abandon fig tree!

LOL........

When I found BB10, I did not have pruning shears with me as I was not looking for new figs on that day. I now have a pair that will ALWAYS stay in the glove box..........just in case.

if i had no shears i would chew it off the tree next time.

there was a local tree that looked promising to me and it recently died.   the only somewhat viable cutting i could get didn't have the strength to make it, if i would have only remembered my shears 6-8 weeks earlier when i first thought to take cuttings .... i would have had one.

live and learn...

Hi Dennis, Thanks for sharing your visit with JR and Dalton. I really enjoyed reading it. It was really nice of you to visit JR as I know he LOVES to have a company and talk about figs. Last time I went there he showed me all of his wonderful plants and got to meet Miss Betty. She is such a lovely lady but unfortunately she has Alzheimer’s and I could tell Mr. Robin was hurt by that but he kept joking with her and I, and made both of us laugh. He is such a great person that take cares of his sick wife and attend all of his plants at the same time. Doing all this by himself when he is 75 years old. We do need to support individuals having such a great traits like JR, there not too many of them around.

And yes, at first I had trouble understanding his French Cajun accent when I saw a nice sized tree planted in ground and asked what variety it was. He turned to me and said, it's O-YEH, I didn’t understand what he said so I asked if he could spell it for me, finally understood he was trying to tell me it was Hollier. From that moment I knew I should call Hollier the right way (O-YEH) in his presence or any other people from that Cajun land. So when I met Dalton and I asked how he liked the O-YEH, he was surprised to see me talking Cajun. Nonetheless, he was really a nice person as well. It’s my firm believe that, the more you go south the more people are polite and hospitable.

I too had problem finding either one's place. As my car's GPS took me everywhere except to their house or nursery. Had to call them both and get the directions. So, maybe it's not only google map that had trouble directing you to the correct destination.

Navid.

BTW, Dennis, congratulations to you and your family on your son’s great achievement.

I echo Navid encomium...Congratulations to your son the MD!

Dennis,

Did the nursery look like I can take a semi in there?

Good to hear you had a great trip and thanks for the info that New Brandy and LSU Scott's Yellow are the same. I got the New Brandy from JR for my parents in Florida and took a cutting to trial up in NH.

Sorry so late Rafed but a semi won't fit in there. you could park on the side of the road and run in for a minutes.

I ordered a figtree from JR last summer and he told me he would send the tree in the fall, which he did, a Smith.Yes i found him a very likeble person and very friendly. It is true that the farther south you go the more you find a better kind of people. The question that i ask him, since he is more knowledgeble then me: What is your best tasting fig. His answer :They all are good! Back to square one.
