My trip to Italy.

I had the pleasure of going to Puglia for my holiday this year, and I took the advice of rafaelissimmo to go see the fig germplasm of Paolo Belloni, Paolo was a really nice humble guy and he showed me around his fantastic grounds.(it was not till I came out that I realised I didn't take 1 photo inside very disappointed with myself guess the excitement got the better of me).
I got to taste lots of beautiful fruit, but unfortunately none of the main crop where near ready. He suggested 15 of August is the best time for main crop, so I have taken a mental note for next time !!
I asked him his favorite and he said pastillere (main), and grise de saint jean (I think for breba but I might of miss understud).
We stayed in a very beautiful trulli house and outside was one of the biggest fig trees I have seen, I spent the rest of my time in my family's region of picinisco, where I managed to buy a panachee fig tree for €13 (bargain) I planted it, and thankfully it was one of rainiest Julys I have seen.

Hi Luke,
End of August,September is the best time I was once told in Southern France - some figs even go ripe as late as December ...

Did you get the full pedigree from the striped fig ? There are several strains of striped figs.
Pastiliere, my tree is playing with my patience, dropped one fig, and 4 are still hanging but barely ... I'm not sure I'll get to taste them, but the season is not over for now and my tree was planted this Spring so ...
I need to be patient ...
Once on trip in Modena ( north of Italy, Main Site of the red cars with horses on the hood), I saw a fig-tree with a fig as big as my hand closed ... Did he have that kind of strain ? ...
I'm still wondering if I dreamt as I was passing by in a bus and had little time to see the details of the fruit ...

Beautiful pictures, Luke.  Glad you had a great time.

Looks like you had a very nice trip.
My family is originally from there so I have visited that area quite a few times and I always found the atmosphere enticing.
(the friendly people, the Truli village, the huge caves, the hot dry climate, the fresh fish, incredible grapes, olives and of course the figs..oops I am dreaming).
I may go again this year or next and also want to see if I can visit the fig germplasm of Paolo Belloni and also see if I can pick up some of those hard to get Italian varieties.
as they say over there ..ciao tutti

Glad you enjoyed it Luke, congrats.

I am way to jealous to read this post or look at pictures. I'll read it later once I've calmed down.

P.s. I hope you had a good time.
