My very first figs

These are the first ever figs from my plants.
The Marseilles was bought from Edible Landscaping this spring. The plant is only about ten inches tall, but has five figs on it. If I removed the figs the plant probably would have grown, but I wanted to see how it tasted, so kept the figs. As you can see there are a lot of FMV spots outside.
The fig tasted watery and bland, with a lot of seed crunch. There was no noticeable taste or flavor.  I hope the taste improves next year.

Atreano was bought from Burnt Ridge Nursey. The plant is about 30" tall and very healthy, with about ten figs left on it. This fig tasted better than the Marseilles, but not even close to my expectations (from what I have read on this forum). This one was slightly sweeter, but still without any noticeable flavor.

Both plants are in five gallon SIPs. I guess I should have left these firstfigscut.jpg  on the plant for another day or two, but I did not want to lose them to the birds or tree rats. firstfigs.jpg

Welcome to the fig frenzy

Taste flavor sugar will improve a lot if you let fruits ripe properly.
That is till skin start shrinking.
If you afraid of other creature taking it ,install net over the plants.

The Atreanos should be lighter color when ripe, sagging, almost falling off the plant very soft even starting to look wrinkly.  I picked my first ones this year somewhat riper than yours, have learned to wait even longer.

Hi Mat9,
If you just have bought the trees, that is just normal. You need to take good care of them before they go full strength and can fruit to their best.
Don't give up, keep them "well"(not too much, just what it takes for the trees to be happy) fertilized and watered.
It can take a small fig tree 2 or 3 years to reach its full capability, but they are worth the patience.
Those figs on the plate were not ripe enough. You'll need some testing and tasting to educate your eyes and hands to pick the figs at the right time.
As for critters, well, load the gun !
As pellets (deterrent ), I use coffee, gypsum (new test against ants - trunk white wash some call that) , lemons, traps, ally plants ( forget-me-nots, mint, ...) . Live and learn !

I also enjoyed my very first figs this week. Needless to say I am hooked! They were only Celeste but small and tasty. Can't wait to try other varieties!

Don't say "only Celeste." Tastes are so subjective. If you enjoy it, then good for you! And if you have a Celeste that doesn't drop its crop, even better. Can you (and Mat) find better tasting figs? Yes, probably, but don't discard what you have in search of the Holy Grail, unless, of course, you have found the Holy Grail. Even then variety might be valued.

Celeste is an excellent fig!
