Got this fig from a friend who is moving back to Portugal, probably this winter. She is not sure what kind it is but is looking for the label, It is a very productive plant. Ripened lots of figs even in this lousy summer we had. Even with the rain we have had in the past few days, the figs will dry on the tree, had two when I picked it up, and they are very tasty. I would rank them in quality on par with VDB. No evidence of figs splitting or souring.

It's a nice healthy looking tree. It looks a lot like the San Pietro figs that Joe Morle sells. Did you look at his website?http://www.figtrees.net/

Perhaps Vista Mission? Some say VdB and VM are the same and some don't.

The plant is about 4 or 5 years old. and the leaves do not look like the leaves on my vdb. taste is not same as vdb, just similar in quality, in intensity, complexity, maybe better, since the flavour did not seem washed out by all the rain we have been having. I culled a large number of very green figs off, in the hopes that a few that are changing colour may still ripen. if so I will post a pic of ripe one.... the two I ate at her place were very red on inside and very sweet, outside kind of greyish purple brown. and the leaves do resemble the San Pietro leaves on the link you provided Meghan. is San Peitro the same as san pedro types, breba types like dersert king? just wondering.

On second look, probably not VM. I enlarged the photos and now doubt that it may be VM. At normal view the leaves have a resemblance to VM leaves Jon has posted on the Variety page.

Grant, I'm not sure on that. I had read that they are different figs and Joe said they produce several crops so I don't think it's going to be like Desert King. This is my first year growing one, so I won't get figs till next year.

My friend has not found the tag. but the fig is from Portugal, and as far as she remembers it is a Pingo De Mel. all the pics and descriptions of Pingo De Mel that I have seen are of a light coloured fig. So maybe this is something new. or maybe not, maybe just a name. .

Its not unusual for a fig to go by one name in one country and another name here.

Possibly "Olho de Perdiz" (trans. 'Eye of Partridge' )--has a distinct red eye.http://www.cotr.pt/documentos/FolhetoFigueira.pdf

That's interesting. Partridge Eye is a parent of UCR 187-25. It also was panned by the guy who wrote the major reference work on figs, forget his name, didn't do well in Riverside CA, I guess.
__________________ Especially desired figs: UCD 187-25, UCD 200-48, UCD 157-17, UCD 309-B1, Princesa, Black Madeira, high quality sugar fig that ripens Sept-Oct. Probable desired fig: Smith, St Jean, JH Adriatic, CddB, Gulbun, Pastilliere, Sucrette Rooting: Smith, CDDB--this pretty much means I have my fun tries (tho' important since they are truly desirable), and only interested for this year: Gulbun, BM, 187-25, or something wildly exotic or precious that nobody has any good reason to send me.

That is a nice looking fig. Interestingly enough, my granddaughters spotted a tree with limbs hanging over a parking lot. It's a big, old tree. I couldn't identify it, either. But it looks an awful lot like this one. Kids said the figs were really good. My area had a lot of old Portuguese people who settled in many years ago, so maybe it's a similar tree.

It's definitely not a pingo de mel, seen quite few of those in Portugal and they're green/yellowish.

Knowing you are in Canada, those figs will not color properly, not having a strong enough sunlight,,so my opinion is that the color of fruits if grown in warmer climates will be purple - black. If the above is true, then looking at the leaves, and the eye color ,plus the shape of the fruits, the above fig,in my opinion is what UCD ,call , Ischia Black.

I have no idea what it is. Nelson, the link you provide does look a lot like it, unfortunately I had no ripe figs this year to compare, but the one last year was much redder inside than the one in the link the leaves and outside colour was same, a day or so from ripe, but they disappeared one day/night., so I do not know what inside looks like. The ones I had last year when the plant was given to me had dried on the tree, so no comparison.

Grant I got to enjoy 1 that ripened on mine. Many more did not but hopefully next year I'll get to sample more. The one I did eat I thought was very good. Tyler

OK Nelson,if you have both and you compared them, what can i say,I admit,I am wrong this time. The only detail i missed is the growing tips on the mistery fig is not enough dark ,compared to Ischia Black. Any way if the mistery fig produced good tasty ripe fig, this past ,difficult season in Canada,it is a very valuable cultivar.
