MYTH BUSTERS FMV

MYTH or FACT

So I successfully raised a cutting infected with FMV. Have I just infected all my other figs?

OR

Will it only infect the others if I plant it in the soil?

OR??????

What ever you do dont eat a fig from it for it will make you grow a third ear.
Most fig growers have it some just dont realize it.
Most nursery's figs have it .
Oversea's Nursery's have it also as i have some from well known Nursery over the pond.

In short i was told long time ago dont sweat it for if you do you will be missing out on some of the best types of figs cause they have it also.
Now i eat some of the good ones like Ronde , Black Maderia , and others .

Martin, you say that FMV will make you grow a third ear like that's a BAD thing.  I am about half deaf now, so maybe this will help.

Five of my trees (I only have 15) show signs.  I figure it's only a matter of time before the rest do also.

From my experience (which is limited), and from what I've read (which is a lot), FMV is a fact of life for most of us, and there's not a whole lot to be done about it.   The good news is that most of the time, the trees appear healthy otherwise  and they still produce.

Since there is a lack of definitive, scientific information behind this topic, the answers will be very personal and laden with opinion rather than fact.

With that said, I think the correct answer for me is:  "Your other trees are already infected, you just haven't noticed the signs yet"

Holy crack up!  Love that 3rd ear thing!  Nice to know it won't hurt anything!  I didn't notice it on Catherine's Nacido, but think I saw it on the Wild One, and definitely my V d Bordeaux from UC Davis.  Panachee appears to be fine.  Thanks for the reassurance!

Wow!

Thanks all.

I guess that I will assume I have it and if I don't I will and that since I live in the South it will not be as bad for me and that if care for my trees it won't be a big deal.

I posted once about mites spreading FMV.  (But odds are good that others posted about that too before I joined, probably lots of info on here about them).  I read it in some research papers from UC Davis fig people (Falk and Salem).  From those papers, it seems reasonably established that mites spread at least 2 of the 4 (or more) viruses involved with FMV.  Not sure what info you're looking for about the mites though...   ?   I didn't find anything yet about where (geographically) they live and don't live, but I think they're ubiquitous.  Also, the mites don't start out having the viruses in them (when they hatch)... they have to pick it up from infected trees.  So they spread it, but they aren't necessarily an origin.

A search on "mites virus" on this site found lots of hits, including a bunch of info from Jon and others. (Some interesting reading there).
