name that bug #2

James (JD Smith) recent post on the unknown bug made me go do some research on my unknown bug.  I have these orange, very large ant-like creatures all over my figlets.  I tried to get a photo, but they are very aware of their surroundings and very fast.  When I got close enough for a photo they would move to the opposite side of the branch or leaf.  Come to find out they are a beneficial insect that love aphids, mites, etc for dinner.  Check out the link on the Milkweed Assassin Bug........glad to have them in my fig forest and on my side.

Are you sure what you have is not leaf footed bug nymphs?    google it and have a look.  They are on the figs piercing them and sucking the juices.  If that is what they are terminate with extreme prejudice. Assassin bugs are not normally seen in groups.

WillsC,

Wow, very similar but my bugs are exactly like the one shown in the wiki link.  My bugs are also not piercing the leaves or stems.  For a technical guy I should have been less dramatic about my number description.  A more realistic definition of "all over" is approximately one per tree.  Some have none, some have one and a couple have two.  I can't find any figlets with three.

Well that is good.  I have several hundred fruiting plants and those nymphs are evil.  Because they like fruit my yard is like their mecca.
