Name This Fig -- Maui Fig Tree

I just returned from Maui and was fortunate enough to collect cutting from this Maui fig tree growing on the island.  It is surviving without any special care.  Can anyone help in naming its variety?

The taste of the fig was delicious (very sweet) and there was a drop of honey at the end of it (open eye?) when I picked it from the tree.

I have no idea of what I have here (novice fig owner) but I will attempt to root the cuttings and will probably send a couple of cuttings to a more expert grower so that it is not lost if I fail in rooting.  :)

Can anyone help in determining the variety of fig?  Even if it is a common variety like Brown Turkey or a Celeste, its delicious taste will be make it my Maui Common Fig!

Beautiful Brown Turkey.

Thank you, Brian. I do not have a Brown Turkey so this shall be my Maui BT fig. I will attempt the rootings and hope to have plants to share in the Spring.

Thats a little big for a bt? Or not

OK, the floor is still open for guesses. The picture showing the whole fig was one that covered my entire palm. It was pretty big. The picture of the cut fig was another one slightly smaller. The taste was delicious, sweet, honey-like and I guess jammy if I had to give it a name. Definitely not Fig Newton. I had heard that a Brown Turkey didn't have such a great flavor. Well, if this is a Brown Turkey, I am a new fan. :)

Glad you got a nice memento of your trip!  Looks like a very nice fig.  My first thought was also Brown Turkey but, if it is, the next question is what type of BT?  I don't know much about the various BTs since I don't have one but I'm sure others here will be able to help.  I have heard that BTs that are caprified have a superior flavor.  Has the fig wasp been introduced to Hawaii?

I think there is more than one Brown Turkey. The southern one is smaller than the California one. All are very nice when picked ripe. The BT we get in the grocery from California are always picked too green

Thanks, Steve. I have brought back many a souvenir from my travels with my family that I have regretted. This was one I was most excited to bring home.

Also, the Agricultural Check was nothing. You just go to the station at the airport. As long as it is " no leaves, no soil, no roots", the inspectors did not blink twice. You just show them the cuttings and they waved me through.

PawPawBill is going to work with me on rooting the cuttings since he lives so close to me. The rootings will be a local project to see if we can bring these cuttings to life.

Dumb question. If this is a caprified Brown Turkey, do I have to go back to Maui to pick up some fig wasps? That will be a little expensive unless someone wants to exchange some fig wasps for a couple of cuttings.

The last picture ( open fruit) really looks like an English brown turkey. It seems strange, but could be a possibility.

The English Brown Turkey is the latest guess on the ourfigs forum, too. So we have two votes for English Brown Turkey and one vote for a caprified Brown Turkey. Keep the guesses coming.

Hi,
Sorry to bother you with that but don't call that " the brownturkey" as it is not. It could be a "Brownturkey something" be it california BT, or whatever BT.
But it is not the "BT" as the BT is really brownish for the maincrop, and brown-redish for the brebas .

Whatever yours is, it looks to be an interesting fig to me. So take good care of your cuttings and keep us posted :) .
If you have enough cuttings try this with one or two : 3 weeks in a bottle of water changing water every two days, then in a gallon pot full of compost - keep moist and half shaded, at the end of September install in ground (or keep in pot if you're keeping them in a pot). Good luck !

- I've bought an unknown labelled BT (but can't be the BT) - I hope it will fruit like yours . Patience ... patience ...

Not English Brown Turkey, not flat bottom.  Not Southern BT, wrong leaf.  Really looks like a Celeste variant to me.  a picture of the eye would help to determine if it is a Southern BT.  If it grows good, tastes good, who cares.

Maui has some really great farm products and most are larger than those on the mainland.  The Pineapples, avocados, onions were the best, and largest I had ever seen.  I lived in Pukalani, Maui for 2+ years.

Here are are few more pictures of the inside of the figs (the double sided is the really ripe fig - and the other is a closeup of the smaller frig) and one of the bottom (not clear - sorry, forgot to focus before taking pic).   We will work really hard on rooting these cuttings. One of Dr Johnson's comments was that a Celeste grown in one location may not look the same as one grown in a different location.  While he was talking about Celeste, it would most likely apply to other cultivars as well.  As I said earlier, Maui is a great producer of produce, flowers and all Flora due to the volcanic ash soil and the weather.
