A few native de argentile figs starting. Noticed a few days ago.Click to enlarge
martin, you do have some great figs. i can see why rafed is keep asking where they are kept.pete
What's your take on this variety?
Bullet thanks but some types i will not have next spring. As for Rafed he has good sense of humor.Dominick have not tasted this type yet , plants first season bearing ripe figs .
Martin, what is your source, UCD, Bass, Adriano, ?
Martin, Yes, Rafed is a good man with generous heart and good sense of humor. He provided me with White Greek and number of cuttings from Unknown Israeli Red. Pete
I appreciate the pics Martin. How are they inside?I have 2 very small, rough looking, trees of this one. Hopefully they will make through the winter. I plan to put one of them in the ground with a little manure around it in the spring. I'm hoping the manure will put some growth on it.
Jason i let that person speak up if they want to sometimes when names are mention they get lots of emails been there done that. ; )Bill, i have not seen inside yet there still on tree as replied to Dominick plants first season bearing ripe figs .But Bill im curious, it looks like tomorrow i can taste 1 maybe 2 of them. Now there are some more getting ripe i notice when i came home.
I see why my ears were buzzen.Martin,I see on another thread you posted is a green fig. What's all that about?Santa Cruz Dark, looks light to me.
Santa cruz Dark wont be in my yard come next growing season.
Sorry Martin, I missed that line in your reply to Dom. Sounds like you will be getting to sample it soon though. Look forward to hearing from you on it :) .rafed,It's looks like Martin will never return from the "dark side". The fig force is strong with this one!
This morning picked 2 figs from plant cut in half and put on plate , then went and picked a pastiliere fig brought back .I picked up the argentile figs and downed them then realized oops i did not take picture .Oh well they were only average tasting nothing memorable.Few more are swelling and i'll have another stab at them to take pictures.
Here is ripe picture of thread title fig.I have been eaten a few of these now .
Good looking fig Martin. Can you say anything more about the taste...or is it still only average? Is it figgy? Berry-like? Juicy or jam-like texture? Do those seeds give a crunch? I have this one on my grow list and I have a cutting that is thriving.
JD when i taste a new type fig i make sure i did not just brush my teeth or mess up my taste buds so i can truly see what a new fig has to offer. It just is bland tasting nothing stands out to me in this fig and the 4 or 5 i have eaten were nice and ripe.Butto be fair its first season producing .
Ok let me reiterate: what is the 'original' source? Whether that is your source's source or source's source's source or ... I'm just curious of the origin so I know If I can expect similar results from my several trees of this variety.
Jason the person got this from UcDavis.Grew slow at first now grows very normal.Hope that helps answer your question. ; )
Yes, and thanks! I am having the same experience with mine. Very slow to grow at first. It does put on decent growth after year #1 though.
hello Martin, looking at this fig on the tree it hangs down. i've notice this and am wondering if this helps that the fig hangs that way. maybe when it rains or bird problems??? it is a very nice looking fig. good health, luke
Hi Lukeott, all the figs in my yard get the hangmans neck i have many pictures of different types that display it.Rain here is not much of a problem only 1 year it came down bad at the wrong time with record rains in a weekend, but i can split them if i water the containers too heavily at the wrong time iv'e learned that in past .The birds here while plentiful are not interested in my figs for some reason.
Has another argentile today and same as others kinda creamy or maybe slimeish texture to it. , the pastiliere fig i had this morning was better.
Another argentile fig from 9.16.11
Same poor flavor?
Yes basically the same. Will see how it taste next season.
