Navid's Unknown form Turkey

I started this tree from a cutting I received from Navid around the beginning of the year.  I asked him for some of his favorite tasting varieties and among the cuttings he sent was this variety.  I got to say, it sure is sweet and delicious.  It also grows well and produced a lot of figs even in its first year.  The figs go through a phase of a brilliant red before turning to the dark purple you now see.

Hi Mario,

This Unknown is from Greece, not Turkey. Glad that you like this variant.

Navid.

Looks delicious and sounds like a keeper.  Thanks for sharing.

You definitely sent me the Unk. Dark Greek, but you also sent this one which had "Unk. From Turkey" written on it. You sent 2 cuttings of the greek fig and both are really tall now.  You sent one on the "Unk. from Turkey" and one of the 'LSU Red" which is like 8 feet tall now, 2 LSU Scott's Black which are doing great, and a few other cuttings. You were very very generous! Would you like to see the leaves for ID... maybe you have since identified the variety so its no longer unknown? I think it may even still have the yellowish paint marker on it, but it is 100% the one you sent that had "Unk. from Turkey" written on it. The UDG and the UFT figs you sent are very different from each other in terms of fruit and leaves.  Thanks again for your generosity. :)

It really is. Its different from other figs in my collection and its a keeper. Syrupy flavored goodness.

It resembles my Aldo's Palermo Red, both inside and out. Nice photos of a delicious looking fig!

You are correct Mario. I sent you those cuttings. Had totally forgotten. Unfurtuanately, my own cuttings didn't root. They were from Antalya, Turkey.

I'll send you some so you can try again. Mine almost didn't make it but now it is strong.  PM me in a couple months to remind me.  Its a nice fig Navid, and I think you'd like it in your collection.  :)

Also, the UDG figs never stay around long enough to take a picture of the fruit. haha

Mario

A very nice unk.

Thanks Mario. Here are couple of pics from the UDG. Been my number one fig for several years.

Navid.

I see from your picture dates that the UDG is ripening about first week of August to first week September. Is it in ground or potted? Assuming this is the main crop would you consider it an early fig? Thanks,
Devin

This is navid unknown dark greek. I just call it Navid Dark Greek to differentiate it with other dark greek. Got only 1 fruit because the tree was heavily infested with FMV. Now the tree look a bit ok and grow better. This fruit should be keep a bit later but am too curious about it taste. Navid didnt lie when he say it taste was outstanding. Absolutely a keeper. Looking forward for this variety. 2nd round fruit should be much better than 1st crop.

Sure thing. And yea, I can see why this fig has been your number 1.  If I could compare it to anything in my collection I's say its similar to the Mt Etna types but has its own personality.  It should be on everyone's wish list who desire productive trees with delicious fruit. How did you find that tree?

This is in a pot, main crop, and my trees are very young so I cannot tell whether it is an early fig or not, but my gut says its a mid-season fig.

Mine are loaded with fruit and show little signs of FMV if any at all.  I'd say mine are healthy and productive.

Very nice looking fig. I'll be interested in finding out its ripening times for main crop as your tree matures.

I grow my UDG mother tree, in a 40 gallon container. Depending on weather, main crop ripens late July into early Aug and continues to rippen till mid October.

Navid.

Thanks Navid, sounds like I would get a good portion of the main crop here at least.

I'm going to call this Antalya Red.

They look great and thank you for posting the info on them. Added to my wish list.

The name Antalya Red sounds great Mario and it seems like you have another winner there from Navid !

Mario,

I prefer to add an "Unknown" to the name.

Navid.
