Need advice. Plants outside with green foliage but temp dropping to -6C !?

Put atleast 20 young plants into the shed last night didn't want to take any chances 2 of the 3 inground trees are being stubborn will chop off all the leaves this weekend. Wich reminds me I need to buy some tarps.

Alright I can't resist. Here's some pics of my nutty night endeavor.

Holly Molly Dominick your certainly a qualified fignut lol. How's you back?

Alot! Plus other parts are still missing. LOL-  The large ones are going in ground next year.

Oh I fee your pain trust me. Last year I was in pain for almost a week even took a flip down the stairs while carrying a 20g plant with my dad to the garage he was laughing and I was not. But its part of the job I guess. Well atleast 20 are stored got altleast another 120 to go woohoo cant wait.

I have just left mine outside for now, but I am closer to Windsor anyways so I am not getting sub zero weather, just a good layer of frost.  This morning was 1 degree and it had frost for about 4 hours, I have just left all my leaves alone except at the bottoms of the plants, the first tree to loose all it's leaves was the Black Madeira followed by Celeste.  I hope I am doing it right, I have always stored figs under lights before, but I don't have space for 20 under lights.  I was planning to leave them out for another couple weeks as saturday we are schedualed to get 2 degrees (celcius) and then only a couple days below 5 in the next couple weeks.  I figured this would help keep them hardened off a bit before winter storage, anyone else doing this?

Hey Chivas

I am in Toronto area and have a similar forecast . I have put my 2011 rooted cuttings and 2010 trees in the garage due to -2 c weather last night . The rest will stay out to help them go dormant . No rush for them if forecast is correct .
Last year my trees saw 25f before bringing them in .

John

Well, I just moved everything in the garage and threw a tarp over my inground younger trees. It's supposed to get down two high 20's low 30's and maybe a few inches of snow here now. It should only last two days I hope that's enough...

Thank you John for your advice.  I left everything out, even one year cuttings, no frost this morning, chilly though.  My neighbour ripped all the leaves off her massive in ground tree last weekend and already pushed it down, I am thinking this weekend it will be covered with leaves and a tarp.  Too bad she threw away all the branches she cut off before I could ask her for cuttings.  Another guy in town is just putting up his frame around his two in ground figs, there are several more people around but I haven't seen them in awhile.

I have heard some else say they rip the leaves off to. That doesn't hurt the tree?

No cutting the leaves off doesn't hurt. It just helps the tree to stop absorbing light through the leaves.

Right now the goal is to stop the sap from running.

At what point would you want to start cutting off leaves? My inground trees really have not dropped any leaves yet. The potted trees are all over the place some are bare, some still have all the leaves.

I have all mine in pots so they act a bit different.  I assume your wrapping most if not all?

This weather has thrown me for a loop. My plants didn't drop all for another 2 to 3 weeks. My younger ones are still holding the leaves on strong. Maybe wait since your in Jersey. It is suppose to warm up to the 50's next week.

Anything after that I would go ahead.

Dominick, totally agree with Neson's comment. You have a very nice jungle there.

Something happened overnight last night.
Though the leaves of the older plants had started yellowing but the younger ones (rooted in 2011) had green fresh looking leaves until yesterday with some showing some sign of fall. However, as I found a while ago, almost all the new plants have dropped leaves almost completely overnight though the temperature did not go below -3C /27F, whereas it had been -5C/23F just a couple of night ago.
I am not complaining, just curious for the sudden defoliage, knowing it must have been building towards it.
Now I can start storing them cleans.
