Need help with my ailing Sicilian Black

I bought this last season. The top was snapped off during shipment. It seemed to be coming back ok, but now all of the leaves look like this.  Any ideas? This is a JR Black sicilian.

John, looks like fig rust to me. Spray with bordeaux mix as directed. I'm pretty sure all the affected leaves will fall off, but will grow back. I doubt it'll hurt the plant. Check the undersides of the leaves and growing tips for spider mites, too. Looks like it may have gotten a little dry, too with the crispy edges on the leaves. I'm sure others will chime in.

Thanks, I'll look for that spray.

Rust is one possibility.

However it could also be under-watering. For this point in the season, I am not seeing a lot of growth which could indicate insufficient water and insufficient nutrition (fertilizer).

I just planted it in the spring so I am hoping that explains the lack of growth. I am assuming the root are getting established. It has been hot as hell here recently so I guess more water couldn't hurt but the trees planted right next to it look fine. I'll hit it with some fertilizer tomorrow. This is a tree I really can't afford to lose. It was big $$ on ebay last year.

when i get a plant like that i cut all the leaves off and water/fertilize.  i figure that if the roots are deficient, that will take the load off them, since there will be no transpiration from the leaves.  if it's indeed rust, that's less food for it.

i never worry about knocking the leaves off my ailing figs, since figs have no problems regenerating them once the problem is alleviated.

this is what i've decided to do with my ailing black madiera.  cut the leaves off and put it in full sun, fertilize heavily, and whatever happens, happens.

of course, we've all got our own style :).

It does look like a combination of rust and water. As far as rust Home Depot or Lowes carry a copper fungicide. Just a side note try to spray late evening or early morning and do not mix stronger than label this time of year. It is best to use when first budding out in spring and then a follow up application in 2-4 wks. I have the same problem and sprayed last month. I got some more leaf damage because IMHO I sprayed mid day but they are all doing much better. Rust is a big problem in FL

Just a caution about removing leaves when a tree is in full sun--if I tried that here in Tucson, the bark would get severely sun-burned. It's very common here to see fig branches with a strip of dead, exposed wood running along the top due to sun-burn.

THat's rust and a lack of water in my opinion.  Mine did that until I gave it more water and more fertilizer.
