Hi Pete,
try to put CLOSED EYE VARIETIES in the search box on this forum. There is already simular thread in there.

I also live in NC, but somewhat new to the fig world myself. Most of my figs are still on want list. So, I had  good expericence with Celest - very tasty, but drops fruit in drought. I also tasted my Chicago hardy. It was good, but I suspect, might be better as it mature (it was the first season for it). I also have Violet de Bordeaux, but did not tasted the figs yet. How is your Kathleen Black doing for you?
As for Col de dame blanc I got impression it is great fig, but needs really long and hot summer since it is a late producre. Maybe the black varaity could be better for you since it was suggested it ripenes up sooner than the white once.

good luck

hi karla,

i just put those plants in 12" container last week. i have no clue what they will taste like. i never had fresh figs befoe. i got those per the taste list from the forums on net. i'm hoping i don't kill them and will have something to eat next year.

Pete, what part of NC are you in?  Another thing to consider is, what color figs are you seeking?  To me, and this is just my opinion, I like the black or dark color figs becaues they seem to be richer in flavor and taste.  However, if you have a Parasido, then you will love that fig!  The flavor is very good and excellent in taste.  It is a green fig and one of the best green figs I've tasted along with Strawberry, Italian Honey,Arteano and this unknown green fig I got from Home Depot last Spring.

Celeste is very common in NC.  It and Brown Turkey are the only 2 figs I've seen for sale here 2 years ago.  But Celeste is one awesome Red fig.  A friend from this forum sent me a fig as a gift last year.  I think it is Celeste because the fruit looks the same but the leaf pattern is different.

dennis,

i live around rtp. i never had fresh fig before, so i'm not sure what i'd like the most.

but read that closed eyes are better if there are some bug problems. i have occational ant issues, and this area is big with japanese beatles. and few wasps. had to get yellow jacket nest out of my mail box few years back, along with being attacked by them while trimming the lawn.

only thing i know is what i heard on forums. paradiso, violette de bordeaux, col de dame blanc.. all of them i heard tastes good. so i'm trying to get them. kathlee's black, i only heard about it on east coast figs forum, but heard it tastes good.

Marseilles Black (VS)....

I recomend all the ones before + ADRIATIC JH,Gino, and Tacoma Violett,Maltese Falcon, and Bataglia,of course, wich has closed eye and dark red interior with excellent flavor.
And any Barnisotte Black without fig mosaic virus.

If I might add based on what Herman2 said, I love Gino's fig.  That is one fig that produces a lot of figs!  And the flavor and taste is very good!  On my tree, I picked my last figs 2 days ago.  I also thought Pananas Purple was another good one.  You see, there are so many good closed eye figs out there.  cheers,

thanks everyone.

i think i found a source for col de dame blanc and marseilles black vs. might be rooted trees or cuttings. not sure yet. i need to stop thinking about figs. my wife will kick me out to the garage.

What do you mean stop thinking about figs?  Impossible

Pete,

I am trialing lots of figs (100+) in South Louisiana in an attempt to find the best cultivars for my rainy climate. I am also searching  for those mid to late season cultivars that would significantly expand my fig growing season. Good figs can be had in my area from Mid June through the month of November and often into December.  Closed or tight eyed figs are very important to me in my research.

I would "HIGHLY" recommend Joe Morle's White Triana fig to you. Col De Dame is indeed an excellent tasting fig. However, be aware that it is a late ripening fig. One must have a long hot season for these figs to ripen properly. Too, most trees in the US suffer from FMV which can hinder the growth of this cultivar and its productivity is still in question.

You can read about the observations that I have made on some of my in ground fig trees in the link below. You will also read why I so highly recommend White Triana to you.

Dan

dan,

thanks for the information. i did consider joe's paradiso and white triana, however, i found better deal with different figs with another known resource. joe's fig trees are still on my list, but i want to make sure i don't kill the ones i have first. and paradiso, violette de bordeaux/negronne, and kathleen's black all seem to be good sorts.

day time temp here will stay up to 60 degrees or higher until the dec. night time temp might drop to high 30's by nov.. during oct, usually night time temp will stay around 40-50 degrees. so i'm hoping late crop figs will work. then again, i don't know anything about figs or any fruit trees.
