Need motivation to tackle those pesky squirrels?

"Tastes like chicken."

I'm not interested in eating them, but am in the midst of significant habitat removal effort - removing a large patch of over-grown juniper shrubs. Not tree squirrels here, but for our local ground squirrels. All the problems, but without the pretty tail.

Dale: It is illegal to shoot, poison, trap or relocate squirrels in the states of Virginia and Maryland. Imagine a mother squirrel goes out to find food for her young offspring, the hungry baby squirrel is anxiously waiting and waiting for its mother to return with food, but its mother is gone forever. Finally, the baby squirrel is dying from starvation. I feel sad for those who kill them for food. The law of Cause and Effect states: For every action there is equal and opposite reaction. we are responsible for the effects of our actions. The nature of that effect depends upon the nature of the cause. If the cause is "good", the effect will be "good". If the cause comes from negative thoughts or evil, the results will be equally negative or evil.

Tam,
I don't know where you got your info from but there is a legal hunting season for gray squirrel in all states that I aware of including Maryland and Virginia. The legal hunting season last from fall through winter and at this time of year squirrels do not have offspring.

Squirrels make good table fare and although compared to chicken sometimes it really just taste like squirrel. I see know problem with someone consuming an animal that has been consuming their produce.

I don't want to get into a "who killed Bambi's mother" argument with anyone. Squirrels are rodents. They breed pretty prolifically. I passed on those links sent to me by an avid outdoorsman. I shot my first and last animal was I was fourteen, but have no problems with others who those who shoot to eat. I just thought  the sites were funny. My apologies to anyone offended.

That's funny that you mentioned "Squirrels" I've got to get my pellet gun out and do some target practice...They have dealt me h*ll  this summer in my garden, tomatoes, pecans, growing pots, gnaw a bite or two out of my Vegetables, and digging holes in my Fig Pots.....I  am fixing to start a war with them! Hopefully, I can thin them out, I counted 14 this morning in my backyard! I am MAD !

I've been relocating squirrels and other distructive creatures with the direction of our Animal Control Officer of our Borough this year
The live traps you can get cheap from Harbor Frieght are all you need IMHO. Squirrel traps $7 opossum/raccoon traps $29
The neighborhood cats happily take care of the chipmunks. I see the prowling the garden often.
I have lost only 1 fig so far this season

A tree full of half eaten figs would be motivation enough for me.. lol..  We have several squirrels around our house (who doesn't?), but fortunately, they haven't bothered any of the ripe figs I had this year.  They'll stay clueless to their savory goodness, if they know what's good for them.

Sadly we no longer live in a world where natural preditors keep the populations of vermin under control. For example, people don't understand the benefit of snakes and are afraid of, and kill, all they see - then wonder why they get over-run with mice and rats. And then they use poisons some of which then secondarily kill what eats the dead or dying rodents... It's a vicious down-ward spiral that over time only results in even more rodents.

That's what happening in my neighborhood. Next door they are fearful of everything and kill all the snakes. And the result? - they have even more 'noxious rodents' (ground squirrels, bunnies, rats, mice..) and now are putting out poison bait stations. They are very nice people, but have no clue. If you are going to live in a somewhat rural area, educate yourself. I now worry about the owl that's been helping keep the neighborhood gophers in check...

If you want to garden sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I use a two-pronged attack. Remove rodent breeding habitat, and second, sadly, kill the poor things. But do it as quickly and humanely as possible. I really don't like to do it, but I have to unless I want virtually every thing I try to grow eaten or seriously damaged.

Where I grew up in Colorado some local ranchers were setting out poisoned meat to kill eagles and hawks.  They had the crazy idea that the eagles were responsible for killing their sheep and calves.  All because those birds are known to eat carrion.

And back to the original post.  Those websites were funny.  I like the moose and squirrel meatball recipe.  I don't want to start a big argument, but I agree with hunting for a food supply and my family does.  Deer meat is far better for you than any meat that is available at the grocery store.  No hormones, less fat, so on.  Plus I feel better about an animal that has lived with a purpose other than to be food.  Chickens, pigs and cows are all raised for no other reason that to be food.

Maybe find a local hunter to take care of the problem for you and the the meat won't got to waste. Squirrel is good to eat and ground squirrels can be used to supliment barn cats diets.

The act of killing other sentient beings is the major causes of wars and suffering towards humans in our world today. Humans think animals have smaller brains; therefore, animals are not morally equivalent to humans and animals do not possess the rights as the humans have. Then humans slaughter of animals for the taste of their meats. But all sentient beings have evolved to do everything in their power to avoid being extinguished. The suffering animals feel very anguish before they die and they release toxic chemicals corresponds to fear, panic, stress and death to their bodies. So those toxic chemicals are all over meats and blood. These negative chemicals are the major causes of diseases such such as diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease and so on.

According to quantum physics, everything in this world is made up of pure energy including ourselves. Everything is energy, including our thoughts and emotions. So we and everything around us including other beings like animals and trees are connected with each other. We, including other beings like animals and trees can see and feel each other because we all have the same energy and frequence resonate with each other. So, everything we and other beings do, think and feel will be vibrating into this field of energy and it is affecting everyone in it either directly or indirectly. So be careful what you wish for… you will get it. Now let us take this one step further it would mean that the way you and I think and feel can change the world for the better. So just by committing to think and feel in a positive way will make a shift in the universe and our world will benefit. If everyone on earth starts to think, behave and feel positive we will make our world a place of peace. In other word, our thoughts, our words and the way we behave is a cause that sets off a wave of energy throughout the universe. We must realize that the way we think and feel can influence and effect everything around us and everyone in the world because we are connected with each other. You cause a change in the energy field around and in you, and it ripples, touching everything. And everything of course ripples back in reaction, sending it back to you, all multiplied. These are the essences of the Law of Cause and Effect.

The squirrels eat my figs, what am I going to do. Here what I recommend you to do.

1. You must plant your fig tree in the third quarter of the moon cycles.   When a fig tree is planted in the ground during this time, it adjoins to the planet's electromagnetic energy field. The energy field of that fig tree becomes fixed in the planet's energy matrix and the moon cycle at the moment it is planted determines where the tree's life-energy will be centered. Also, at this time, there will be a special light rays, Grids of Light forming around this fig tree. The Grids of Light radiating from this fig tree will protect it from diseases and the fig tree will make and release special volatile substances which repel insects and animals. This fig tree will be more healthier and consistent in bearing abundant, tasty figs every year. Moreover, this fig tree will suffer less damage in the winter. However, there will be no Grids of Light Protection for a fig tree growing in a pot.

2. Ask nature to protect your fig tree and tell squirrels please do not eat my figs. Just keep asking the nature to protect your fig tree and telling the squirrels not to eat your figs...Everthing takes time to manifest. All things have a beginning and grow into form as more energy is added to it. They are like seeds planted in our fertile minds that bloom into our physical experience if we have nourished them. Thank you for watching.

Thanks, Tam. You made my day! :-)

Squirrels ate a lot of my figs early this summer. I then used organza bag, which worked quite well.

I still say I am going to thin some squirrels out!!  I was raised on wild game rabbits, squirrels,Deer  etc. and in my mind I see nothing wrong with eating wild game. I will respect anyone's beliefs  and I hope they will in turn respect mine... : )....Now lets get back to talking about Figs...lol

Thank you Frank!  I agree with you.  I won't force anyone to eat fig stuffed squirrel when they come visit me if they don't want / like / believe in it.

Let me preface this by saying in not going to get into a religious debate because that is not what this forum is for. I do however want to educate those who may be hesitant to take wildlife and why it is important from a conservation standpoint to do so. Would you rather have 50 squirrels that are sickly and all starve to death because of lack of resources or 10 happy well fed squirrels. The reason the squirrels may be poaching figs is because there may be to many squirrels for the amount of resources. Unless you are talking about extreme wilderness where there are natural predators and man is not at the top of the food chain the natural balance has been altered and some species need to be controlled. That is why there are hunting seasons. Possession limits. Check ins. I guarantee no state would allow you to hunt an animal to extinction. A good example of this is the state parks in Indiana. Natural predators such as wolves, bobcats, and mountain lions have been removed. State parks did not allow deer hunting and what happened is the entire under cannopy of the Forrest was lost. This means plant species, berries, cover for small animals such as squirrels, sickly starving deer. After introducing monitored hunts all of that came back and is now thriving. I think everyone here wants what is best for nature but sometimes tht means controlling species. And by the way please don't capture animals and dump them in a new place that is not designated if you chose to go that route. That can cause many more problems. Just research envasive species.

I just saw a squirrel bite off my last green tomato; scurry away with it;
and after tasting and finding it not edible, he/she just dumped it!
What a waste! Of course I was pissed and I am not sure about the fate of this one particular squirrel.

In the past, some squirrels did mess-up with my figs, and they all ended up dead...
The big problem is that there will always be more and more squirrels ready to take residence on/near my backyard.

Scott is correct you see it with deer populations it can be a cruel not to thin them out, making it important to have hunting. If you aren't going to eat the meat then that also to me is a waste. There is room for all God's creatures right next to my broccoli...

Tam,

I just want to say that I respect your attitude. I wish we all shared your positive outlook.

Thats the great thing about this site, many views from many cultures. and its really great when those views can be spoken without harsh words due to disagrement. I myself hunted many animals (for food only) I even hunted some people (Army). now i think peace is the way togo. but as for killing animals for food, I think the native american in me comes out. dont kill just to kill, and dont waste.

Well put Dave

Dave,

Thank you for your service!
