Need Rain

Its really dry in my neck of the woods and this June is going down as being in the top 2 driest ever.
Been watering my figs much more even with useing a much heavier mix in some of the newer ones.
Is it really dry anywhere else, i recall last season Texas had a bad dry season.

I live in a funky micro climate it's been like a typhoon 16 miles away where I work and not a drop at my place

No rain yet here either. Temps in the 100's, and winds of 10-20 mph in the afternoons. My newly planted corn gets watered three times a day to keep the seeds damp. Gettin kinda tired of it.

I think everyone wants a happy medium, but we don't always get it. I know droughts are very tough on everyone, but so is too much rain. I'd freak if it rained here because my wine grapes are soon ready for harvest, and rain is NOT good for them now.

Fingers crossed for those of you that need it!

Martin,
You can have all of the wind, rain, and grey skies that Debby has brought to Tallahassee and the rest of Florida. It is not helping the 2012 crop of figs that are ripening or thinking about it.

I don't know about the rest of you guys and gals, but this year has been terrible for my fig trees, so far. Cold, drippy, overcast, Spring... then, last week, screaming hot, blazing sun for days.

I'm just hoping this season will bring some ripe main-crop figs. The only trees that are doing really well are my unknown, Red Italians...they are growing like weeds, and have set a heavy main-crop in spite of the lousy weather. My Atreano keeps sitting there in a coma, and a new "Shar Italian" still thinks it's in the shipping box.

The hopes I had for main-crop figs has now morphed into hopes that my trees will survive the coming winter storage. My trees never looked so miserable. I hope things change real fast over the next weeks, and go good for the rest of the short summer.

In our California Mediterranean climate, we very rarely get rain in summer. Usually no significant rain from the end of March to sometimes Halloween, if we are lucky. End of Nov (Thanksgiving) is more likely.

Average rainfall is about 15 inches per year, but that includes El Nino years with lots, so reality is anything from less than 5" to over 40". And you never know beforehand. And it all falls in winter. Everything that needs water in the summer must be irrigated.

Here in n NJ we've had more rain than I know what to do with.

Although my figs seem to be loving the weather.

We've have a lot of rain here too.

Rueben,

I think Dallas is getting all of our rain. Last Wednesday we had some rain. Officially it was 0.07" but I know we got much more than that. By Thursday, the ground was dry. By Friday, the cracks were growing again. It's too bad grasshoppers don't dehydrate. I am (slowly) expanding the mulch rings around my trees. My goal is to be at 4'+ diameter for the trees planted this year, and 6-8 feet for the larger trees. I'm also increasing the depth of the mulch.

Hang in there, buddy. We only have 3 or 4 months to go before we cool back down into the 90s. It sounds like Dave is in the same boat we are.

~james

We've been pretty dry here in southwest PA. Every time they call for rain it either misses me or it will just sprinkle enough to dampen the sidewalk then the sun comes out and drys it up whatever fell in 3 minutes. Last night was in upper forties and Thursday and Friday is going to be 90 and humid with 30% chance of rain. In other words, it won't rain. I got to move the figs closer to the house.

Noss, I built a couple of toad houses and a toak bath! I don't know if the houses are occupied, but I keep the bath filled. I bought a 14" plastic flower pot saucer, set it in the ground a bit so the top of it is ground level, added a few rocks and water. It's also good for butterflies and maybe hummingbirds.

We had one of the driest Mays in years, maybe a record! Then the rains started in June - oh happy day! Now we haven't had any in at least 2 weeks, summer is here with triple digit temps. I just finished watering the garden.

Oh dear! Do not mention Toads or Bull Frogs to me! On a golf course, they abound, and in August they come out and poop everywhere on my patio! They are HUGE, and I would NOT encourage them!

I don't think they eat figs though...

JD's getting all the rain! I'm having to water my trees daily now. Suppose to be 100 this Friday and Saturday. Guess I will be watering morning and noon this weekend!

Just got done watering fig trees and veggie garden , i think my gym shoes might grow as well as they got a good watering as well. ; )

Anyone old enough to remember this one? :)

Not really i was still learning to hit the cherrios in the toilet.
But what pretty Gal.

Yes...This old man remembers real well, I reckon I better take a 10 shutup right about now!
